How much pumped BM?

I recently had a baby girl who has done really well with breast feeding.  My husband has been wanting to be more involved and I would like to begin pumping so he can be involved in the feedings and I can hopefully get some more sleep.

How do I know how much milk to pump per bottle?  She is currently 4 days old and weighs about 8lbs.

I would suggest pumping as much milk as you can in one session, which will probably be around 2 to 4 ounces since she is so small. Since your supply isn't established, yet, I would personally not pump more than one feeding/once a day... Though, I am not an expert and someone else may have better information on pumping while establishing your supply!

Also, I would only stick to one pumped bottle per day because you don't want to have to deal with nipple confusion since she is only 4 days old and is doing well w bfing already.

Alot of people advise not to really start pumping and giving bottles for the first few weeks. DD really fought the breast for the first week, I ended up caving and giving her three bottles during that time and it was usually 1-2 ounces. Though I pumped 6-10 ounces at a time.

I suggest going a little longer since your milk supply is just coming in and getting established. Once you level out a bit around two weeks then you could start to pump and offer 2 ounces at a time with a really slow flow nipple.

I would just pump for 10 minutes (on a double pump).  I would get between 4-8 oz at that age.

ETA:  I had an oversupply and engorement.  The LC recommended that I start pumping at 3 days old.

I disagree. You really won't get much, or any, extra sleep. You'll still have to pump for that feeding in order to keep your supply up. Missing feedings, especially so early in the game, can really impact your supply and lead to issues like clogged ducts and mastitis.
If you can hold off on pumping for a few more weeks it would be better. Either way, pump until the milk stops flowing. You might get 1 oz, you might get 10. Everyone is different. At this age your DD will likely drink a 1 or 2 oz bottle so you could freeze the extra if you pump more than that.

Honestly, at this point, this is not the way for your husband to be "more involved." He can do ANYTHING else but feed the baby. It isn't really a big deal. The last thing you need to be doing is trying to pump and have your DH struggle to give her a bottle - possibly frustrating the baby and causing nipple confusion. Pumping is a PIA and I wouldn't do it unless necessary and right now, it's not.

I don't get why some Dads are so obsessed w/ feeding their baby - it's literally the only thing the mother has to do, let it be. Tell him if he wants to be involved he can change her diaper anytime, get you water and snacks while your nursing, cook meals, clean up, do the laundry, burp the baby, play w/ the baby, bathe the baby, rock the baby, take her for a walk, etc.

It's more trouble that it's worth.
