2 wk old - increasing fussiness?

LO turned 2w yesterday; coinciding that is a marked increase in fussiness.  Usually during the day he nurses then naps in the napper, and I'll have to wake him up every 2-3 hrs to feed/change, then he goes back to sleep.  His fussiness is at night around 9-12mn.

However, since yesterday, he has been having daytime (afternoon) fussiness as well.  In the am he's pretty content; he lies awake in the napper but entertains himself.  However, in the afternoon, he constantly cries.  We can console him by DH doing the "jiggle" and holding him.  He will fall asleep but as soon as we put him down in the napper, he wakes up and starts wailing again.  I can only console him by nursing him.  He falls asleep at the breast but as soon as I get him up to burp, he wakes up and frantically roots for the boob again.  I can't even hold/cuddle him because he goes nuts looking for the boob.

FWIW, he poops about 6x a day and wets at least 8 diapers, so I assume he's getting enough to eat.

Is this increase in fussiness normal?  I worry about colic or allergy but seems like with those problems, the baby cannot even be consoled at all?

Newborns go through growth spurts at 1,2,4,6, and 8 weeks. Its crazy. I would feed him whenever he seems hungry, and maybe try swaddling for the startling self awake issue. That really worked for DS.

This may be reflux... My dd has reflux and it is worse in the evening/night. When her stomach is upset, she will also want to constantly nurse for comfort, but will unlatch and cry often. I now know that this is the problem, so I will redirect and try to soothe her without nursing since this only makes her stomach hurt more. If his fussiness continues or gets worse and is accompanied by a lot of spitting up, I would talk to your doctor about reflux... Also, just in case it is reflux, you could try laying him down in something at an incline, such as a RnP or a swing. GL!

My pedi mentioned at our 2 week appt. that what they call colic usually starts between 2 and 3 weeks.  Classic colic is a marked fussiness in the evening hours, but a happy baby in the morning.  To me that's what your LO's symptoms sound like.  Unfortunately you can't do much to fix it.  They usually outgrow it around 2-3 months old.  Gripe water helps our LO, as does a change of scenery at that time of night.  Maybe try a white noise machine or swaddling as PP suggested.

It could also be reflux, but that usually occurs after all feedings not just the night ones.

As PP mentioned if baby if hungry definitely nurse, even if it feels like you just nursed.  They really do go through a lot of growth spurts in the first 2 months.  And every baby is different as to when exactly that happens.

Good luck.  The best thing anyone ever told me about a fussy baby was "this too will pass".  In other words, it's tough right now, but eventually you'll trade the fussiness for giggles and then teething and then crawling.

Thanks for the reassurance.  DS is pretty contend in the mornings, will nap and play in the gym without being fussy.  I will keep in mind the "this too will pass" motto.
