I dread feedings

Tonight has got to be the worst night ever.  I am to the point that I dread meal time as it is stressful that I start to cry and hand her off to my husband,.  First off I know my LO has acid reflux so I know what the problem is but in the beginning everything starts off fine.  Then about half way through a bottle, I stop to burp and that is when all, hell breaks loose.  She stiffens up, screams, arches her back, and starts thrashing around.  When I do give back the bottle, he moves her head back and forth like a wild animal before sucking ont he nipple.  Since she screams all the time, I have no idea when she is hungry, when she is full, or if she is just in pain.  All the normal gas relief remedies don't work.  Everytime I feed here it is hell for both of us. All of the stress had caused a lot of problems between my DH and I.  Any suggestions?  I am beginning to wonder is there isn't a bigger, underlying problem such as something developemental going on.  It has been like this since day one.  BTW I EFF.

Have you talked to her pedi? Is she on meds? What kind of formula?

Ask for different meds. That isn't the only reflux medicine out there. Also there are lots of other formulas out there that might work better for you. Hope you find some relief!

I have heard this one goes by weight and can take several dosing adjustments to work. We are on Prilosec 2ml twice a day and it works about 80 of the time! There are some days he seems bothered but not like before.

We had almost exactly the same problems.  Zantac didn't work at all for out LO, but Prevacid worked wonders!  We also put rice cereal in with her formula.  But all of this is under Dr. orders so I would check with your pedi first.  We were told to get the extreme reflux checked out right away, because if LO is uncomfortable and in pain every time she eats, she could develop a food aversion.

A lot of women I know have tried this or an oestopath and have had wonderful results. I don't know all of the details though, so like pp said maybe check with pedi first (unsure of the age they started).

Both my kiddos didn't like being stopped halfway thru to burp, and DD rarely burps now anyways.  Your Lo could also be pissed that you are stopping to burp when she wants to just keep eating.  Mine also thrashes around trying to get the nipple in her mouth

I've been there - it's so stressful! My LO acted exactly like yours, and I dreaded feedings. It was so, so hard on both of us, and I knew that she wasn't getting enough. Rice cereal didn't work for us - it made her really painfully gassy and constipated.

After trying the rice, we started off on a low dose of Zantac, which seemed to help some for a couple of weeks. Then the reflux got really bad - worse than before the Zantac. The pedi upped the dose to the highest recommended for her weight, and now she's like a different baby. She eats peacefully, and we both actually enjoy feeding time.

Definitely ask your pedi about upping the dose or trying a different medication (we were going to try Prevacid if the higher Zantac dose didn't work). In the meantime, I know this goes counter to all reflux advice that says to burp frequently, but I found that LO did much better if we didn't stop to burp her midway through. Even now, I only burp her at the end of a bottle, unless she pulls herself off. That works much better for us, so you might want to give it a try!

This sounds soooo much like my son. He'll be 5 months on Sunday and we struggled sooo much with the feedings.  He did exactly what you were describing.  We use the enfamil gentlease and that has worked the best for us by far.  We also were using zantac 2x's a day before going up to 3xs a day and now we are using the generic version of AXID.  It has made a huge difference.  He gets 1.5ml 3xs a day and we also at times (although its much more rare now that hes on the AXID) use mylanta 1ml.  It will get better.  Its been a long tough road but once you figure out the right meds it defiantly makes a world of difference.  We take him to a ped GI doc once a month and thats definalty helped out a lot since they solely focus on the stomach.  GOOD LUCK AND DONT GIVE UP!!

Have you tried switching formulas? We switched from gentlease to similac sensitive and it fixed the same symptoms you are describing. Hope you get relief soon!

Is she getting any better? My now 9 y/o daughter was dignosed with reflux as a newborn as well and suffered for 8 months before I realized, on my own, that she had a dairy allergy.  I had wondered why the reflux medicines did not help at all.  Once I eliminated the dairy from her diet, and started her on a soy-based formula all was well.  She is still dairy free to this day and probably wont grow out of the allergy.  I would at least explore the possibility of a food allergy.

So sorry to hear about your troubles.

Have you heard of Colic Calm?  It's an all natural remedy that can help with acid reflux. I would give it a try, especially since it's all natural.  We used if for our son who was terribly colicky and it really helped him.

You can get it at Walgreens for like $20.

My baby was doing the same thing and I was stressing just like you. Turns out she couldn't drink enfamil. It took me a week to figure out why she would freak out all the sudden. It was because when she pooped, the enfamil gave her a rash around her butt hole sorry! Idk how else to say it and when she was going potty it burned. A little desitin cream healed it right up and we switched to similac isomil. No problems since! Maybe it could be something like that?
