Car shopping: Tell me about your Small SUV

Does anyone here have the Hyundai Tuscon or the Mazda CX-5?

Do you like it? Cons, Pros?

I've read the official reviews but just wanting a few personal opinions from owners.  Thanks!

DH and I have a Toyota Rav4 -  does that count as a small SUV? We like it - only had it about 8 weeks but so far so good! And the gas mileage isn't nearly as bad as you would think.

Good luck with car shopping!

Me too! That's my favorite one right now, but we are looking for one that's a little less expensive, but still very reliable.  2013 is looking like it will be the year of fertility treatments so we need to keep costs down.

I have a Ford Escape and I love it! I was between the Escape, a Subaru Forrester, and a Honda CRV. I love my Escape- it has a lot of space. I used to drive a bigger SUV and I was worried that the Escape would be too small but it's not.

DH wanted the Edge but I liked the design ofthe Escape better. My Escape is a couple of years old so it has a boxier design than the ones now. DH was also happy that the Escape was about 4 or 5 thousand less than the Edge.

Cara- have you thought about getting a used Edge or Escape? I've heard Fords can last awhile. Never buy a used Jeep- they are known for having issues.

I have a Subaru Forester and I like it a lot. For the price, it was the best option to have a AWD (from Canada, eh! It's a necessity! hehe)I bought the PZEV edition and I'm pleasently surprised by the gas mileage

I drove test a lot of smaller SUV and personally, I didn't like the Tucson. The rear is larger than most of the other ones I tried.

Another vote for the Subaru Forester. I love mine, get good gas mileage (25-27 hwy), and it does very well in bad weather (used the sport shift to drive it in the snow with no chains or traction tires).

DH and I don't have either of those, but we do have a GMC Terrain. We absolutely love it. It is so comfortable to ride in. It gets great gas mileage also. One of the best features is the climate control. You set the vehicle to the temp you want and it does the work. Works the same way as your thermostat at home. I would highly recommend it.

Old member lurking...don't flame me....Stick out tongue

I have the Hyundai Tuscon and love, love, love it! The ride is very smooth and 'car like', however it handles very well in bad weather. The transition to AWD is very easy. The interior is very spacious and it's good on gas.

I have a friend who has the CX5 and she likes it as well. I have been in her vehicle and it seems spacious and it's a smooth ride.

Other posters mentioned the Honda CRV and the Ford Edge. I test drove both and didn't care for either. The Edge (IMO) was a complete match up with the Tucson, so I couldn't justify spending thousands more. It just wasn't worth it and didn't make sense. I also thought the CRV was smaller and I felt more 'closed in' when driving.

ETA...The 100k warranty on the Tucson is a plus as well.

Don't get a mazda... I have one and it freaking sucks. Once it hits 90k, everything starts to go down hill. AND it's expensive to fix!!

That being said - I am also in the market for a cross over/SUV. We have been looking at the GMC Acadia and the Chevy Equinox. We are leaning more towards the Equinox now after sitting in both SUVs in a car show. It's roomy, lower to the ground, great safety features and CHEAPER than the Acadia. We're saving money up now to purchase one next spring.

I love, love, love my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee.  While not necessarily a small SUV, it's not huge, either.  I get about 23-24MPG, too.

As for a truly small SUV, I love my mom's Subaru Forester.

Have to disagree with you on that.  You are correct about anything 2010 and older, but Jeep is under new ownership (Fiat) and some of their new cars are amazing, especially the Grand Cherokee.  It gets many, many awards and it also holds its value really well.

Are you looking at a SUV for the AWD/4WD capabilities? If you are, I highly recommend that you look into the differences in each vehicle's AWD/4WD system. They are not created equal.

I drive a '13 Subaru Forester. MH drives a '10 Subaru Legacy. I guess you can see what my thoughts are, haha. If you are needing AWD, at least research a Subaru. There are some great YouTube videos out there if you search "Subaru all wheel drive comparison".

I had a 2010 Honda CRV but it was a lemon.  I love the car but I kept having mechanical and computer problems with it.  I just traded it in for a 2013 Acura RDX and I am in love!! Great with power, comfort and gas milage.

I agree with the post above re: AWD/4WD - that will make a big difference in the price.  I had an Acura RDX, and after driving a car FOREVER, it was an easy transition for me.  It had a great car-like ride with all the bells and whistles of a luxury car instead of an SUV.  It was AWD and had turbo, so it was zippy and didn't feel too heavy.  However, with one large front facing car seat in the back, I felt like it was too small, and since I knew we were going to start TTC, I traded it in for the larger MDX.  Let me tell you, I am in LOVE with my MDX.  It is very spacious without being huge, it has fold down third row seats and is AWD.  Both of mine were certified pre-owed, so had an extended powertrain warranty to 100k miles.  It is worth checking out used ones for the savings.  I drive a lot and had over 80k miles on my RDX before I traded it in and will likely keep my MDX to 100k mi.

Good luck!

I've read the official reviews but just wanting a few personal opinions from owners.  Thanks!

I have a 2012 Tucson, I got it in July. So far I love it, it handles really well. I live on a long dirt road that doesn't see much plowing or sand/salting. So far so good. I bought mine for the AWD option and it has great mpg's. I average about 27. The warranty is by far better than most. It is 5 year bumper to bumper unlike most which are 3 year. The power train is 10 years also the dealer added 1 more year on top of that. Good luck let us know what you decide!

My former boss had a accura mdx and I loved driving it.  It's so smooth and the third row is nice with 4 kids.  The downside with it is there isn't a lot of storage space in the back.
