3rd trimester and folic acid

I got a cold over the weekend and was looking at a chart on medications during pregnancy to see what I might be able to take for it. You know, the ones that have the ratings of A, B, C, D, and X. During my browsing, I saw that Folic Acid during the 1st and 2nd trimester is an A, but then for the 3rd trimester it was listed as C!!??!!

I looked at some other lists, since they all seem to be a bit different in which things they include, and 2-3 said the same thing, while others were more general about it, and some didnt even mention folic acid...I also found a few articles saying no folic acid after 30 weeks is a new recommendation.

Does that mean its dangerous to take prenatals with folic acid during the third trimester? I do plan on asking my doctor at my next appointment too, but I was wondering what you ladies had heard

This is news to me. I will ask my mw next week too.  With DS1 I kept taking the same prenatals the whole 40 weeks and continued for a year after because I nursed.  No one told me to stop the folic acid.

One thing my mw did tell me is stop taking vitamins with DHA past 36 weeks.  I forget why though.  My prenatals do have DHA in them.  Now I'll have to get some new vitamins just for that. :(

I take an extra 5mg every other day due to previous losses and my DR said to continue until delivery. I did the same with DS. That means every other day I'm taking six times (or more) what's in the prenatal. Everything I've always read on folic acid says it's water soluble and you can't get too much. I'd be interested to see what you're reading. I can't find anything negative on google.

I've always heard that folic acid and iron are needed most during the 3rd tri for the end of developing organs... I hope its not true that we shouldn't be taking it!

I believe the original list I saw was on kellymom. I was surprised, and then found a couple articles saying it might cause asthma?

So mayoclinic.com says that folate is a category c IF it is taken in concentrations that exceed recommended levels.

Never heard that before - always thought folic acid was good at the recommended dose - period!
