XP: 40w2d - Is this normal

Hi - I also posted this on Nov 2012 board.

I am 40w2d; I have not had any BH this entire pregnancy (or none that I was aware of) so  I was hoping you guys could help me figure out what I am feeling - i.e. just normal pregnancy pains at this stage, BH,  or contractions.

Last night while sitting on the couch and while sleeping my lower abdomen would get tight, somewhat painful, but more of a crampy feeling across the entire lower abdomonen - almost like period cramps or feeling like I had to go to the bathroom.  It did wake me up at times.  It appeared to be more of a dull achy pain than one that would come and go at intervals; and my entire stomach did not seem to tighten up.

Do you think these are the beginning of contractions?  I know they are different for every woman so wasn’t sure if this was just what they might feel like for me.   Baby is moving around pretty good and I feel OK – just tightness and crampy in the lower abdomen.

I think it could be the start of contractions, but really you'll just have to wait and see what happens.  I wouldn't be concerned about it.

Since you didn't mention it, I assume you've had no bloody show or lost your mucous plug yet?  I gave birth at 40 wks, 2 days and labor started out with dull period-like cramps that eventually got stronger and timeable. I didn't question it though because I lost my mp 4 days prior and I had bloody show at the time so I knew I was in labor. 

You could be in early labor.

I think BH are generally cramps only in the abdomen and labor pains wrap around to your lower back.  That was my experience when I went into labor, my abdomen,side and lower back all were in pain, not just my abdomen

Sounds normal. Unless the progress and get worse they won't keep you at the hospital. I have had those same crampy ctx for weeks.

Hi there.  Im new to the 3rd Tri board, but am a STM.  With my son, I had no BHs and that's exactly how my labor started (but as previous posters said I did have the bloody show/MP thing a few days prior).  I had early labor contractions like that for about 12 hours, but then they stopped for about 18 hours and returned in full force for another 30 before I had my son.  Good luck!!

I just figured out a few days ago that I was having contractions, but I did not realize that's what they were because there was no pain associated with them.  When they occur, I feel pressure in my belly, sometimes preceded by a mild, period like cramp.  Mostly it's my midsection that gets hard but not the entire belly.  Hope baby decides to come soon!  It's torture being this far along and waiting!

sometimes when this happens to me, i look down and his butt is sticking out and my stomach is more cone shaped (when lying on my side) I think his head is pressing against my organs/bladder and it feels crampy!

I agree with this. With my first pregnancy I never had any BH, didn't lose my mucus plug (or didn't notice it) and didn't have a bloody show, went into labor at 41 weeks 6 days and what you're describing sounds like what my early contractions felt like, but only time will tell. GL!

I never had the classic, "back, radiating around to your stomach" contractions with either of mine.  Both times they felt like very bad menstrual cramps that eventually got timetable.  So it sounds like it could be early labor.  Time will tell!
