Vegetarian/Vegan Protein

Question for all of the Vegetarians and/or Vegans out there... I am a Vegetarian-- ALMOST Vegan. I am also pregnant... thankfully my doctor is completely okay with my diet. I used to do fruit and flax shakes every morning but since I got pregnant, fruit wasn't too easy on my stomach. I am hoping to start up with them again soon since my nausea has subsided. I am wondering what type of protein powder or mix or something I can add to my shake. Any suggestions??? Prefer NO WHEY, NO SOY, NO DAIRY... I haven't had any luck with my search so far. Thought about adding some greek yogurt but if I overdo the dairy, I get really stuffed up sinuses.

 Help!

Egg white protein powder?  Pea/rice/hemp protein powder?  The Sunwarrior and NutriBiotic brands don't use soy lecithin.

Do you like quinoa? That's high in protein and is a complete protein. Peanut butter/almond butter/any kind of nut butter? Or even just nuts? I'm sensitive to dairy, but Greek yogurt doesn't bother me like regular yogurt does.

I totally forgot about quinoa! I do like it. Do you think it could be dry and ground up to put in shakes?? I have only eaten it cooked.

I've never tried it, but google says yes! That's actually a good idea...I might have to try it!

My husband puts peanut butter in his shakes... I tried Sunbutter once. Didn't like either one. I might have to try almond butter... doesn't have so much of a nutty taste.

I do greek yogurt or shakes for breakfast each morning. I also was doing shakes with protein powder previously, but found you can get just as much protein if you add some greens to your shake. I'd recommend fresh or going to a health food store to find a green based protein powder. They also make powders with pea protein.  Aside from shakes and tofu, I also have been eating seitan (wheat protein) so I am not eating too much soy. I had never tried it before and really like it!

For protein powder, hemp, rice, and pea are all options.  You can also buy hemp hearts which I often put in my shakes.  Nut butters are great options.  You could also put some kale or other greens into your smoothie for protein plus other benefits!

Why are you not using flax seed anymore?

I still use flax when I bake and occasionally I'll put it in chocolate almond milk but just haven't put it in my smoothies because I haven't been making smoothies (couldn't digest the fruit so easily during the first trimester). Once I start up with the smoothies again, I will also put it in that.

I like the idea of getting protein as naturally and unprocessed as possible (as with all of my nutrients).  Just curious, why do you feel the need to add protein?  I charted my nutrients a few times since I found out I was pregnant (fellow vegan here) just to make sure I was getting the added 25 grams of protein once I hit the second tri (in addition to the .4 grams per pound you normally want).  Turns out I do just fine!

Maybe try kale shakes though.  I love kale (not a shake fan), but a lot of people like to do that.

I use Nutiva Organic Hemp protein = 15 g/serving in smoothies. I also throw hemp seeds in soups and other dishes.
