Infant CPR Class??

Is anyone planning to take (or have you taken) an Infant CPR class? A lady my DH works with has been on him about taking one...and when I mentioned to my doctor help finding a decent one he looked at me like I was crazy and said he really hasn't heard of people taking these.

Maybe it isn't something that is a "to do" and DH's coworker is just a little over prepared??

I have to be cpr certified at work and they always give us an option to stay a little longer for the infant class.  My H and I always stay.  You never know when or if you will need it.

I took one.  In addition to infant CPR they went over what to do if a baby/toddler is choking and car seat safety.  The class was only about 2 hours and I thought it was worth it.

My DH and I took a Infant/Child CPR class too. It was really worth it. I hope we never have to use it. Also only took about 2 hrs. :)

I was CPR certified well before i had my son because I worked at a Daycare, I got it renued after he turned 1 because it was a part of my job requirements with DOC. Honestly, it is very nice to know.

I don't understand why your doctor would act weird that you asked him this. My OB recommended it.  We took ours through our hospital, so check there.

We took ours at the hospital. They had an infant safety class that included CPR. I would recommend taking one.

We just signed up to take it at the hospital.  It was recommended by my OB and our hospital.  I think it's a good idea.

We'll definitely be taking one.  Both our sets of parents are taking one (their own decision, not us pushing!) & my sister wants to take one, too.  The classes our hospital offer also go over some first aid & such, so it sounds like a pretty good use of time to me!

Strange that your doc "really hasn't heard of people taking these."  My midwife gave me a brochure about available classes at my very first appointment & asked yesterday if we're planning on taking the CPR class, specifically.  The ped we chose also asked during our interview with her if we were planning on taking a CPR class.  They both seemed to think it was a good thing to do.

I wanted to take one but they were all filled up, I messed up and didn't realize you could sign up months in advance. We'll probably still sign up for something just so we're prepared.

It was part of our birth class. One week we went in an hour early and took it. Dh didn't but he is CPR cert for work so my mom went with me. And I'm glad I took it. We learned about choking too. I hope it never needs used but I feel better knowing how.

My husband and I are both CPR certified. My husband is a police officer and fire fighter so he kind of has to be - but I really don't see why anyone wouldn't take the time to attend a 2 hour class if it could someday save a life.

DH is an RN so he is already certified.  He practiced with me at home to make sure I knew how to do it properly for an infant.  (My whole family works at hospital so they are as well).

Hello!
I am a paramedic and I STRONGLY recommend taking an infant CPR/First Aid class. Hopefully...and odds are...you will never need to use it, but IF you do you will sure be happy you knew what to do! It doesn't just cover CPR...they cover choking and all sorts of things that could be useful not just for your own child, but once you have babies you will typically be around more people with babies and children. I feel like if it is something you can fit into your schedule & afford to take it is SO useful to have.

My sister and I took one together (my husband is already CPR certified for his job).  It was offered at our hospital along with the breastfeeding and birthing classes.  It lasted about 2 hours and was $25.  It was more of a family CPR class, covering infants, toddlers, adults, etc.  I found it to be very helpful and am so glad we decided to take it.

I'm certified because of my job.  I don't see it as a necessity, but I agree that it doesn't hurt to take the class. I think it's a good thing to know basic first aid and cpr for any situation to be prepared.

This. Working as a medic in the fire dept you would actually be surprised on how many infant calls we get. I think it would benefit you and your DH to be prepared, I personally don't think you could be over prepared when it comes to your child. I wish more parents would do this. The safety of your child is so important.

I would definitely recommend people take a class like this. I am a nurse and have to take such classes at least every 2 years so I won't be taking one. But I have two kids and as infants I used the the choking back slaps on each of them once. The first time I was not a nurse and had only taken a class such as this. It just came naturally as soon as I saw he was having trouble with the graham cracker that he'd shoved too much in. Instinct took over and with the knowledge from the class I just did what they had taught without thinking.

i think it's a great thing to do. I didn't take one because I have the certification already. But they teach you how to help with choking too. I used that numerous times. I'd do it. Also talk to a pedi about those things. OBs are there for the pregnancy, they don't take care of infants and kids.

DH and I took one, and I'm glad we did.  It was actually offered through our hospital.  DS1 had already arrived by the time we took it b/c he was 5 weeks early, so he got to accompany us :)

It's definitely something you should know since when you do need it, it's too late to look it up. Take a class if you can (it's ok if it doesn't offer certification - you only need that for work). If you have an iPhone or iPad, I suggest getting the BabyCPR app (http://www.babycpr-app.com). It has nice interactive tutorials and a simulator where you can practice your timing and knowledge until you feel comfortable. My doctor recommended it and it's an easy way to share the information with relatives and babysitters.

My DH and I have both stayed certified for years in infant and child CPR and first aid. His entire family is in the medical field and I teach, so we knew it was important. When his niece fell into the pool at 14 months old and almost died, CPR by family members is what saved her life! Take it!!! I can't count the number of times I've used the heimlich on children over the past 15 years either. If you take no other class, take this one!

We took one that was tacked onto our infant care class, and I'm so glad we did.  I had NO IDEA DH had never ever taken a CPR class in his life until we were in there!!  Also, the procedure is now totally different from what I learned 10+ years ago, and they gave us a manual for all kinds of emergency situations from infant through adult - just a smart thing to have in the house since you never know.
