Weaning off caffeine before delivery??

I heard the oddest thing the other day from a friend that said you should wean off any and all caffeine before you deliver so the baby doesn't have any caffeine withdrawl...becuase it can make them fussy and more "wired" when they're born. Has anyone else ever heard this??? I'm only 6 days away from my scheduled c-section...so I'd need to start now...

I drink caffeine daily, and lately have been maxing out the limit since I have such a hard time sleeping. But I don't go over the recommended 200-250 mgs per day.

TIA!

I have not heard this. I plan on continuing to drink caffeine at low amounts when breastfeeding. From what I've read this is perfectly fine. I would think if you keep drinking caffeine while breastfeeding the baby will naturally wean. If you aren't breastfeeding, I would not think that small amounts of caffeine during pregnancy will affect them after labor.

I drank caffeine last pregnancy and while breastfeeding.  I worked at an ob office and never heard anything like that.... And the docs certainly never said anything to me of the sort.

I've never heard of that, I'm actually starting to incorporate a little more caffeine in my coffee because I'd been drinking just decaf but I think I'm going to need a little kick to survive once she's here.

I make a pot half reg, half decaf. And if you still want to drink less, you can just make decaf, it does contain a little bit of caffine. But I'm still gonna drink my 1/2 mix when he comes, I dont think I will survive if I dont.

Babies exposed to caffiene in the womb handle it better while BFing. So if you wean off now, then have a cup while BFing, your kid is more likely to be restless or not sleep.

So.... this plan could backfire!

My rule is that once I drink the amount of water per day that my doc recommends, I can drink whatever I want caffeine-wise.  But since I'm rarely thirsty at that point, all I've had is water and a little bit of milk/orange juice for the past few months. =(  And of course, the free sonic slushy after every Texans win!

I drank caffeine to the end w/my first (since I ended up delivering at 37 weeks). I don't feel he was "wired". Slept more than anything else in the beginning!

me too. I was doing half caff or decaff, but now I do some full caff so I won't have a huge shock when I need it with baby. My bff is a nurse and she told me the only time it can hurt the baby is during the first tri. She said at this point it's fine. I know she isn't an OB, but I trust her. My OB also never said anything to me about my starbucks habit he knows about. He just said not to go over 200mg.

I never did with DD2 or with this one.  I did notice however, that with BFing that times that I did have coffee I would notice her more wired than if I didn't and for that alone I cut it down while BFing.  I would not have been able to survive wihtout some coffee with a 2 yo and a newborn and I know it will not function well with my 2 DDs and a newborn this time.  I just need to make sure I am drinking enough water and time my coffee break with my BF schedule or cut it down if I see any effects on LO.

I plan on continuing my usual caffeine intake after giving birth, while breastfeeding. I don't drink a lot of caffeine. Usually just a few times a week. So I'm not worried about it.

I am a 2-3 cups a day drinker (and would die without it!!) and it didn't have any effect on my kids while nursing or as far as being fussy.
