Dr recommends IUI

My sperm count has been low and now on Clomid for 4 months the count is high but the motility is low. The Dr. suggested IUI and stated (as he already knows) my wife is perfect and nothing indicating any issues with her since I was the issue that IUI should work with the best chances. We have an apt in 3 weeks. Any advice regarding IUI? Does my wife need to go on drugs, hormones? She really is against drugs, hormones for pregnancy. Thanks

That has so many factors to answer that question. Your dr will give you the best answers obviously. Are you seeing a OB or RE because you only have 2 cycles of clomid left before your in the danger zone. Best of luck to you!

I think he's saying that he's been on Clomid therapy for several months for MFI. I suggest talking about getting a DNA frag test done on your sperm. Your wife does not have to do any medications but most people do opt for medicated cycles because of all the money invested, it can increase chances of success.

My DH is also on clomid. His before number ranged from under 1 mil-6 mil but his morph and motility were good. After taking clomid his motility was a little lower too, but his count was 140 mil. We did 2 IUIs and were successful on the second one, he's on it again right now to TTC#2. I also was on clomid, even though I don't have any issues. The RE wanted me to have 2 eggs to give the sperm more targets.

If your wife is really against drugs, then I guess there is nothing you can do. The IUI helps the sperm get closer to the target so that will help even though the motility is a little low. You can always try the IUI for a couple months and see how it goes.

For me we are covered through insurance at 50% so I really wanted to make every cycle have the absolute best chance of working. I would and still will do whatever I need to get pg, whether that be clomid, injections, or IVF.

Diagnosed MFI- low sperm count DH given 25 mg Clomid daily to increase count DS-Born 7/27/11 So after 2 years of IF we have our little man TTC#2 Jan 2012- Benched due to cyst March- 50mg Clomid + IUI= BFN April- 50mg Clomid- Missed O May- 50mg Clomid + IUI=???

Thanks for the information yes I have been on 50mg Clomid since July 25th. The urologist stated continue Clomid as we go through IUI to increase the chances. We have a IUI consult with wife's OBGYN Dec 14. Then we can proceed with the first cycle etc. What did you mean by danger zone on Clomid? My wife is a teacher and from what she heard they cover 100% of IUI. What does a typical avg cycle cost? Thanks

My DH was also on Clomid, but it did little to improve his count. He saw greater success from acupuncture (from a provider that specializes in infertility).

It's not for everyone, but worth considering for both you and your wife since it does not involve drugs.

The danger zone she is referring to is for women there is a lifetime max of 6 cycles because of an increase cancer risk. I don't know how or if it applies to men. My re hasn't mentioned it for my DH either.

An average cycle is around 300 for me, I believe.

Skip the GYN and go see an RE. I've seen plenty of women here regret doing this and never have seen anyone wish they hadn't. Not only are their diagnostics much more comprehensive, the clinic is set up to cycle patients efficiently. Also for IUIs, it's good to know your total mot. Anything over 5 mil won't increase your chances of success. If you're less than that an RE can work with your URO to come up with the best plan; your GYN probably doesn't have the same kind of experience. GL.

So skipping GYN and going to RE is better?

Reason why were going to GYN first is because my dr sent the OBGYN the test results and I thought OBGYN performs the IUI?

**UPDATE*** We visited my wifes gyno and we have 2 options. Go to a fert clinic and they perform everything together. 100% unlimited number of cycle times covered by insurance. Or go to a (its a local place that does the washing etc. for a small fee) Then take specimen to gyno to perform IUI, I feel going with the gyno since she will be more comfortable compared to a new dr. Most likely it will take place late Jan. I will keep you posted. Thanks
