There are really 2 ways it can go when you are breastfeeding.
1.) You lose weight rapidly (and are hungry ALL THE TIME)
2.) You hold onto or gain weight (and are hungry ALL THE TIME)
Either way you are hungry all the time. This does lighten up though as your baby eats less. Now at (almost) 10 months, I don't feel as desperately hungry as I did when DD was younger. I'm pretty much back to my regular eating habits.
The reason your body is holding onto the weight, is because you are using so many calories, it wants to keep a "reserve" just in case. Eat lots of healthy foods (eat veggies all day long if you can) to make sure you are getting the nutrients you need. But from most women I know that held / gained weight BFing, as soon as they stopped BFing, the weight started coming off quickly.
