Anyone gain weight while breAstfeeding?

I gained 50 pounds with my twins. At my six week check, I had lost 25 pounds. I have gained ten pounds back. What is going on??? I feel so down about it. I am hungry all the time though!

I gained more than 50 lb. with my twins.  I had lost about 30 lb. but stopped losing two weeks after the birth and have recently gained back 5 lb.  I don't know what's going on either.  I thought breast feeding was supposed to make the weight come off.  I am also hungry all the time.

I didn't gain weight, per se, but I didn't lose weight like a ton of other people. It was discouraging each time. I breastfed for over a year with my last two and didn't lose weight until I quit. And then my dumb ass would get pregnant again...

This. I didn't loose weight like everyone said I would. I've heard that your body will sometimes hold onto the fat while your BFing just to have reserves for making milk. I don't know if that's actually true, but its what I keep telling myself Wink

I had a difficult time gaining weight while pregnant (I know I won't get sympathy there) and only gained about 11 lbs.  A couple days after delivery I was at my prepregnancy weight so I figured I would continue to lose and it would be great.  Not so much, I've been putting on weight since.  Especially since I didn't put a lot on during pregnancy I feel like I have no excuse to be so pudgy.  But, long story short breastfeeding doesnt' seem to be helping me out.

There are really 2 ways it can go when you are breastfeeding.

1.) You lose weight rapidly (and are hungry ALL THE TIME)

2.) You hold onto or gain weight (and are hungry ALL THE TIME)

Either way you are hungry all the time. This does lighten up though as your baby eats less. Now at (almost) 10 months, I don't feel as desperately hungry as I did when DD was younger. I'm pretty much back to my regular eating habits.

The reason your body is holding onto the weight, is because you are using so many calories, it wants to keep a "reserve" just in case.  Eat lots of healthy foods (eat veggies all day long if you can) to make sure you are getting the nutrients you need. But from most women I know that held / gained weight BFing, as soon as they stopped BFing, the weight started coming off quickly.

I lost all of my baby weight within the first month, and then another 10 lbs fairly quickly, and then I stuck there and have been stuck for over a month now. It's discouraging, but I'm also hungry and having to eat and drink plenty of milk in order to keep up my supply (I have a constantly hungry chunker). I'm hoping once I'm done maybe the weight will start to come off again.

I gained 43 pounds while pregnant.  I lost about 10 by the time I came home from the hospital.  Lost another 10 over the first month.  But since then I have stopped losing and am miserable.  I have adjusted my diet, I am drinking TONS of water, and was finally given the ok for light exercise 2 weeks ago.

I guess if walking around the neighborhood and eating better doesn't do it for me, I pray I am one of those who loses it AFTER they finish BFing.

I gained weight while breastfeeding and could literally feel my body adding fat to my thighs and butt.  The whole you burn 300 extra calories a day breastfeeding certainly did not hold true for me.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then success with condoms! Who would ever have guessed.
