Will they do an ultrasound?!

I have my first appointment tomorrow (I'm 8 weeks and 1 day) and I was just wondering what will happen with this appointment. Will they do an ultrasound? I really hope they do. I just want to see my little one's heartbeat and know that everything is okay. I'm so scared and nervous but at the same time! I am so excited! I really hope I get to see my little peanut. =)

It depends on your doctor. It's not unusual for women with healthy pregnancies to only have one ultrasound around 20 weeks. You may get one now, but don't be surprised if you don't.

I only knew the exact date of my last period with my first. At that appointment it was just a pap, and the dos and donts of being pregnant. They did a doppler but that was because it was at 12 wks. I don't believe you will hear a heart beat on that at 8 wks yet.

With the other three, I didn't know the exact date, so had to get an internal ultrasound to give me an EDD. Honestly, with my second, I pretty much knew the date but I wanted to see my little bean so I kind of played dumb, lol!

I agree with PP.  My original Dr. didn't even want to see me until I was 11 weeks.  I decided to try a new doc and I was seen by them at 5w 3d and will have my first u/s on Thursday at 7w 6d.  If I were you I would call the Doctor to ask!

Typically you get one at 12 weeks if you opt for the NT scan, and one at 20 weeks for your anatomy scan. I wouldn't go in expecting one, but you can certainly ask when they'll do one if the OB doesn't tell you.

My OB does one at my first appointment because I have a history of IF and loss.

yep basically play dumb: I hadnt had a period for 2 months but I knew I was only 4 weeks so I just let them think I was 10 and did the edd ultrasound lol!

It varies. I also emphasized my history of irregular periods (even though I knew my O date), and they gave me a dating ultrasound at 8 weeks. Otherwise, it wouldn't be until 20 weeks.

With my first pregnancy- I didn't have my first appt schedule til 10 weeks and the dr just looked for the heartbeat on the doppler - and my first ultrasound wouldn't have been til 24 weeks or something.  Which I was extremely disappointed!  That pregnancy ended up in a loss but had it gone ok- I would have waited a long time til my first ultrasound.  This pregnancy- I have my first ultrasound tomorrow but my first appt was last week and it was just history and bloodwork.  If you really want one- maybe just ask if you can have one if they don't use a doppler?  My last dr just said it was because of insurance why they wait so long.

Ditto this exactly.

With my first, I only had one u/s at 20 weeks. This time, I had a dating u/s around 6 weeks and have another u/s scheduled at 20 weeks.

i had a transvaginal u/s at 7w 6d to make sure the baby was were it was suppose to be, and i just had another transvaginal u/s at 10w 6d today, i have my full first trimester scan u/s in 2 weeks, and then im having another u/s day after christmas to check for ds .... it all depends on your doctor and where you are located. (i personally love that i'm having many more than what i've read on here, that way i can know everything is going ok!) GL to you (:

It completely depends on the doctor.  My doctor does a transvaginal at 7-9 weeks (even though I knew my O date) just to make sure everything is fine.  For instance, it helps them check for ectopic vs healthy pregnancy.  Then I got another one at 11-13 weeks and then another at 20

This exactly.  I know it varies, but I wouldn't feel comfortable going to a doctor who wouldn't check early on to make sure it's not ectopic and see if the baby implanted correctly.

Oh, Good God. If it bothers you all that much then why even post on this thread?

Anyways, I have my first appt tomorrow, and my doctor is planning doing an u/s because we aren't 100% sure on how far along I am.

Wait, who said it bothered them?

I think that poster said that it bothered her that people would lie or play dumb about their LMP to get an ultrasound.

I just don't understand asking the internet when you can call up your doctor and ask them what they do at the first appointment. Then again, there are people that ask the internet if they are pregnant instead of just POAS, so I guess this falls into the same category.

As some previous posters have said it just depends on your doctor and rather you know the date of your last cycle. As for me I got one at 4 weeks and 8 weeks because I didn't know the date of my last cycle. The first u/s was too early to give me a EDD so that's why I had to have have the second. Good Luck!

I have my first appointment with my OB set for 7 weeks and 3 days and I will be having an ultra sound at that point. I will say that my doctor really wanted to wait until I was 8 weeks, but as I will be 8 weeks on Christmas day and traveling the following week, I convinced them to let me come in early :). As PP mentioned, I would just call and ask, as all doctors/practices are different.

I am so glad I found this thread because I had my first appointment last week and have a "second half" of the appointment next Friday.  They only did the heartbeat last week which don't get me wrong, was truly a blessing to be able to hear, but I was upset I didn't get to see the baby.  But now I understand it depends on the Dr. And I did know the first day of my last period so I bet that had a lot to do with it too.  Anyway, I was wondering if I should switch drs but now I feel so much better!!  Thank you ladies!!  :)
