Group B Strep?

Tested positive :( Anyone have any experience with this? I didn't have it with DD and from what I understand it's pretty common. I just hate to have another thing to worry about. My 1st preg was so smooth and easy and seems like this one has been one stressful thing after another. I bled at 6 weeks, had a big ovarian cyst, PTL with bedrest the last 3 weeks and now GBS. Anyone STM's feel like one pregnancy was was easier than another? Should I be to concerned with the GBS?

It's nothing to be worried about. If I remember correctly, something like 1 in 4 women are carriers. You'll be given a few rounds of Penicillin through an IV after being admitted to the hospital but that's it!

Is mom or baby required to stay longer than normal in hospital if they test positive and have no symptoms?

Nope, not at all. The penicillin isn't for you - it's for the baby.

GBS is a bacteria that lives in your intestinal tracts. There's a slight chance that this bacteria could be passed on to your baby during delivery - which is why you'll be given the antibiotics during labor.

I am right there with you.  I am a FTM and found out last week I was GBS positive.  I too have not had the easiest pregnancy and got to week 36 and felt I could finally breath, then bam I found out about the GBS.  My Dr. assured me everything would be fine and that it was very common.  I am trying to calm down but at times it is hard.  I am with you on this one.  I have done alot of research and talked to mom's at work.  Alot of people who I have heard have been fine.  Hope it all goes well for you!

Gbs isnt anything to stress yourself out over. They treat you for it while youre in labor and as long as you do that your baby will be born without any complications. I am positive as well and everyone has assured me its fine.

With my first 3 pregnancies I did not test positive and with my 4th one I did. All they did was give me antibiotics through the IV the day of delivery. The only discomfort was that it stung but the OB told me that if I test positive again, they can dilute it to make it more bearable. Other than that it's no big deal.

This.  My midwife explained that it's something we have in cycles-- it appears in our vaginas periodically, then our bodies flush it out after a bit.  It doesn't affect us since we both produce & do away with it, but it's not something the baby's been exposed to yet.  If it's present in a woman's system near the end of pregnancy, then they treat the baby with antibiotics just to be on the safe side.

i think that depends on your doctor and pediatrician you use. With my first child I was positive and had to stay 48 hours after delivery. They did this jut to monitor mom and bab. I had gotten the antibiotics but they still kept me and baby just to be sure. . Just double check with your OB  and baby's pedi.

This, nothing different besides the IV. My sister was neg with two of her children and positive for two so that's common too. My test is next week fun fun...

I tested positive for gbs. I'm going through an induction now. The gave me antibiotics once I got into active labor and they will give it to me every 4 hours till baby is born.

Commenting before reading responses....sorry if I repeat.

It's not a big deal. I was positive last time and all it meant was I got a hep lock in my hand when it was determined that I'd be staying at the hospital (there was a possibility at first that they were going to send me home). I got a dose of antibiotics that I don't even remember getting, and then DD was born. Neither of us had any ill effects, even though I didn't get the full dose of antibiotics.

The one thing I wish someone had warned me about was that being GBS+ and getting the antibiotics can increase the chances of getting thrush, which we did. It sucked.

I'm in the same boat. I had a super easy normal first pregnancy. This time around I feel like it has been one thing after another and now I tested positive for GBS. From everything I have heard GBS isn't anything to worry about. I am trying not to let myself stress out about it too much.
