My mother, who is a very intelligent woman, went to L&D three times when pregnant with me. I was her 3rd child. By the 3rd time she went to L&D she was so embarrassed that she was apologizing to her nurse. She felt so silly, that she, a woman who had birthed two previous children, was unsure what labor was. The nurse was very understanding and told my mother not to feel embarrassed, that this is exactly why they are there and that the majority of the ladies they see throughout the day are not in active labor.
My point is, sometimes our water will break and we will not have contractions. However, once our water breaks we should be seen quickly due to the worry of bacteria infecting our amniotic fluid. If you are worried, take a drive in and have them to a little test for you. That is what they are there for, and they don't mind, and even women having their 3rd child sometimes are not sure whether they are in labor or not.
In the end it turned out my mother had appendicitis that went undiagnosed until I was a month old. Good thing she was willing to get herself checked!
