Allergy intolerance question

If baby has a milk/formula allergy/intolerance would they cry/act fussy at every bottle or is it possible some would be ok and some not? I am trying to figure out if its just excessive gas with little one or if they are reacting to the formula

While babies with an intolerance can be fussy, what you are describing is probably reflux or excess gas. I would speak to your pedi about possible remedies.

My DD had a milk protein sensitivity when she was a baby. She developed horrible eczema all over and would scream and sounded congested after eating and was super gassy.

my oldest had a milk protein allergy that was finally discovered at almost 12 weeks. Starting at 6 weeks, she would act extremely fussy at the bottle and constantly pull off of it.  Every feeding she would get upset, because it was like she knew that after she would eat her stomach would start hurting.

So it was every feeding not just some? This is where I am struggling because he's super painfully gassy and screams and cries at the bottle and pulls away yet is hungry, but not every time. He is on reflux meds so I don't thi k it's that. I am hoping its just terrible gas even though I wish I could fix it but its so hard to know!

It started off being at just some feedings, but it got so bad that she was pulling off and crying at every feeding.  It was horrible trying to feed her.  She was on reflux meds, too.  We tried it all...different bottles, different formulas, etc.  The docs FINALLY did a stool check and found blood.  Being first time parents, we had no idea about milk protein allergies.  We put her on Nutramigen formula and she became a different baby in just a few short days.  The stuff is crazy expensive, but it worked.  What type of formula is your baby on right now??

DD has a milk allergy. Some bottles she would do fine but others she would be very fussy. She got more fussy after the bottle though and during breaks to burp. She would arch her back and spit up and it would come out of her nose. Between feedings sometimes she would be fine but more often she would constantly strain (almost like trying to take a poop) for hours on end. After about a week of the new behavior, she started getting little strings of blood in her poop. You would really have to look for them.

Forgot to mention that she was on Similac Neosure in the NICU, then when she came home we out her on Enfamil Gentle with no change in behavior. So now she is on Enfamil Nutramigen. She is for sure happier on the new formula. Its expensive! There is no hurt in trying the new formula and seeing how your baby does.

This is exactly what my son does. I have tried to bring it up to the doctor but they just keep putting him on reflux meds. The part that is really bothering me is the straining portion for hours on end. I feel so bad for him! They keep brushing it off every time I say something, and, like you said, I have heard that the blood in the stools are sometimes impossible to see.  Is there a way to test for this? It's so hard to know what is "normal" and what is not

Yes there is a simple stool check test...usually you bring in a dirty diaper...with my first you could not see the blood, but sure enough there was blood found with the test.

My LO has MSPI and he started crying during feedings only sometimes and then it progressed to every feeding.  And he had awful gas, a painful tummy, and he started developing mucousy stools.  Your dr can test your LO's stool for blood. I would talk to your doctor about trying a formula like Nutramigen or Alimentum, they are still milk based but their milk proteins are partially broken down and it may help your LO digest the formula better.
