NTTGPR: DH working nights for a week

I've never spent a night alone. I've at least had someone in the same house or apartment with me. I'm honestly not sure how I'm going to sleep. He starts his week of nights on Sunday.

Does your DH or SO work nights? Or has he ever? How did you deal with it?

I know this is a silly thing to be concerned over, but I've just never dealt with it. I don't even have a furbaby.

When I was dating my ex he used to work nights and my hubs has gone out of town for over night trips before. Before we had the dog I always slept with the TV on. Having constant noise kept me from thinking every single bump and noise was someone trying to break in! lol.

Up until recently I worked 3rd shift and I was alone sleeping during the day and I would still do the same thing!

I don't think it is silly at all.

SO and I have only spent 4 nights apart in 6 years. They have all been in the last 6 months. I was not alone in the house for any of those nights.

I can't fall asleep when I am home alone. GL and invest in a big bottle of Tylenol PM Sad

DH is out of town on business quite frequently so i have a lot of experience with this. as PP said, it helps me tremendously to sleep with the tv on or some kind of noise. and i always do a walkthrough of the house to make sure all the doors are locked and everything before bed. i used to really hate sleeping alone, but i have gotten so used to it and actually enjoy getting to hog all the covers and pillows sometimes ;) good luck to you!

I also would sleep with the tv on when DH used to work 3rd shift. Our tv actually has a timer so I would set it for a few hours out so that I would be sound asleep before it would turn off. I would also leave the bathroom light on and the door open so that there was some light in the bedroom but not enough to keep me awake.

My husband travels for work once every four weeks, so I am alone frequently. I actually enjoy my time alone. I use it as time to watch whatever I want to watch on TV, I order takeout that he doesn't like or can't eat, and so on. Of course, I lived by myself for 7 years before moving in with my then-boyfriend (now husband), so I am the type of person who enjoys alone time.

I sleep alone most of the week, but I sleep during the day, so I think it's not as bad. DH had trouble getting used to me being gone at night when I first started working night shift, and used to sleep on the couch because he didn't want to go to bed alone.

In the rare event that DH isn't home at night, I take tylenol PM and watch movies until I can't keep my eyes open.

I travel a ton but on the nights DH isn't there I sleep with the tv on, the dogs are in bed with me and I make sure every single door and window is locked!

It's funny because I lived alone for so long and now I really don't like sleeping alone.

DH works nights 7 nights every month. We live out in the country on a highway so it's super scary. I just keep the doors locked and lock myself and DD in the bedroom and we sleep with a loud fan on so I don't worry about every little sound.

It sucks Sad I'm ready to move into town

DH is on rotating shift.  He works Days one month and Nights the next- I hate it.  I always leave the hall light on and my 2 DS have music on every night. When DH is on nights I turn their music up louder so I can hear it in our room- or I sleep in the living room by falling asleep to a movie.

I don't think this is silly at all! DH used to work 1 week on 1 off 3rd shift as a Walgreen's manager a few years ago before we got married, and I always slept with the TV on. We had two cats at the time who also kept me company.

Yes, my exH did our entire relationship.

My current husband has too.

Keep your doors locked, flashlight nearby, and your phone.  You'll be okay.   Just find something to keep busy.

And, how the heck do you make it to adulthood never spending a night alone?!?

DH has only worked overnights most of our time together so I'm very used to sleeping alone at night. We have an alarm system and 3 guns so I feel pretty safe :)

Thanks so much everyone! I'll probably try all this at some point. It's supposed to be AF week too, so I might even finally try wine. Haha.

And, ChuggingWater, I really don't know. I've just always lived with people on first shift, and I moved out of my parent's house and in with my now husband. I wish I would've gotten it over with at an earlier age. Lol.

When DH is on nights.. I make sure our alarm is set and I have a hammer next to our bed. I also leave lights on downstairs and in our stair hall.

My DH works nights. Thankfully he very often gets lucky and only works 6 hours of his 12 hour shift. When I don't have to be up in the morning I usually clean house and watch tv to keep myself busy until he gets home or its bed time. Lately I have been baking at night (Got to love the holidays) On days I work in the morning....I have a hard time sleeping so I do whatever it takes to make myself fall asleep (hot tea, baths, reading) Our cat was such a cuddle bug when he was a kitten but hes getting into his "grown up" phase so he won't sleep with me anymore, it breaks my heart that I have to go to bed alone now. lol.
Its no fun so good luck. Hopefully the week passes quickly.

DH has worked some very wacky shifts throughout our marriage. He works all three shifts during the week. A day of first, three days 2nd, and 2 days 3rd.

However, last week, he worked 3-11 all week. I am a teacher, so we rarely saw each other. I ended up Oing during that time, so we had a lot of overnight escapades. When DS was born, DH worked until 12:30 AM and was on duty while I slept. I didn't mind it when I was pregnant, I would come home from work and sleep or relax. I do have animals, so I was never truly alone.

My husband works swing shift. It took a while for me to get use to him being gone, and sleeping alone. It doesn't bother me now. I do know that being along... I hear every little noise outside. Every noise my house makes. Use to really freak me out!

This is me, I lived alone for about 5 years before moving in with MH.  Because of our job situation we actually spent the first 6 months of our marriage long distance.  (Our whole 3 year dating relationship was long distance minus about 4 months).  Now he travels for about a week at a time once or twice a month.  I love being with my husband, but I look forward to my alone time too!  :)

I can work on hobbies, watch whatever I want on TV and burp and fart without caring or him picking on me :-P

My husband has been on 3rd shift for almost a year now. At first I really hated sleeping alone but now I sleep better during the week as opposed to the weekends when he is there. When I sleep alone I get the whole bed to myself and I love it! Don't know if this is a possibility for you but sometimes my husband will lay in bed with me until I fall asleep or even take a power nap before work. Then I don't notice when he leaves so I don't think about the fact that I am sleeping alone.

I am so used to H working nights that when he switched to days in July, we had a hard time sleeping in the same bed! He is switching back to nights on Monday, and I'm actually looking forward to having the bed back to myself =]

When we first moved in together, I used to drink a glass of wine to make me sleepy.

But it doesn't take long to get used to it.

DH works nights (at least until Monday. He got a new job YAY!). It's actually been pretty benefical for me because I'm still in school. I use the time to study. However, night time gets a little scary. I'm one of those people who question every bump I hear. It's just one of those things that you get use to.

I would leave a light on in the living room and if it was a really bad night, we have a wave machine that I would turn on so I couldn't make up noises in my head.
