Anatomy US at 19w3d and plus sized

I am getting a little nervous about my anatomy ultrasound in 3 weeks. This is my first baby and on Dec 19th we are hopefully going to find out the sex of our baby. My OB was so excited, cheerful, and happy about having us come back in 3 weeks instead of 4 so that we could come in BEFORE Christmas. But, when we got to the check out desk, the lady there was BITCHY as all HELL and muttering things like "*sigh* you'll be 19w3days by then? Well, I GUESS that will be ok. We'll see if they can tell by then" She made me VERY unhappy and worried, when my OB was the one who TOLD me to come in on that date....is there a chance we won't be able to find out the sex that day??? I'm 5'7 and 225lbs (started out at 217).

I wouldn't worry at all, I am plus size and we got an elective ultrasound at 15w 5d and it was clear as day we are having a boy.

I'm over weight and I had my a/s at 19 wk 5 d and everything went well.  You should be fine.  I would tell the office manager about that grump.

Being a FTM and being the same as you height and weight wise..I was nervous I was going to have so many complications and that the doc would have a difficult time finding baby and what not. I found out what we were having at 17w4d and then 2 weeks later got to see him again because he was hiding some things the first time we had the anatomy scan.

No worries. The receptionist was just being a complete beeotch.

There's always a chance you won't be able to tell (especially uncooperative baby), but I don't believe it'll be based on your weight. I am plus sized and they were able to tell at an elective (about 16 weeks) and the 20 week scan (try 2 since baby was uncooperative on try number 1).

My scan was at 19 wks and 3 days too and it was very clear he is a boy!!

That receptionist was being a B

If the baby cooperates, then you should be able to find out the gender.

But the whole point of the anatomy scan is to measure lots of other things that are vastly more important, and some offices don't like to do them before 20w.   There's no excuse for her rudeness, though.  And I don't think it has anything to do with your weight - what makes you think she was referring to that?

Sounds like that lady is/was just being a B-.  I'm plus size and they gave us a sex guess at ~14 wks and confirmed it at 18 weeks.  I still go in for the high res. A/S next week too.  With my son I weighed more than I do now, about 270 (I'm 5' 9") and they told us the sex at 18 weeks.  I wouldn't worry about it.  She was just being a Grinch.

Your size and weight have nothing to do with what an u/s can see.  And 19w3d is fine, we had ours at 19w2d, and the tech had no problems getting the measurements they need (the actual purpose of the anatomy scan), or seeing the baby's sex.  And it's certainly possible to tell earlier than 19w, we found out with both kids at about 14w, though we waited for the anatomy scan to confirm.

We had no problems getting all measurements and seeing a penis at our 19w4d anatomy scan last time. Our scan is at exactly 19w3d this time. Our OB does them from 18 weeks to 22 weeks.

Most offices try to wait until 20 weeks but I don't know that a few days makes that big of a difference. If your doctor said to schedule I wouldn't worry about what the scheduler said.

It will be fine. I have my ultrasound at 18 weeks and they were able to see with all three babies.

I don't think your weight has anything to do with being able to find out the baby's sex. It's all about the baby's organs being developed or not. By 19w3d, chances are you WILL be able to find out. I mean, there is a slim possibility you wouldn't be able to, but like I said, it would have to do with the baby's development, not your weight.

Also, that woman needs a punch to the throat.

You should be fine. People find out a lot earlier than 19.5wks. Plus if that's when your doctor told you to come in I would just tell that receptionist to eff off. :)

Exactly. I don't think her comments had anything to do with your weight at all. I had to reschedule my a/s due to a work conflict. When I called to make the new appointment, I asked if they'd prefer me come a day or two earlier (19w2-3d), or a few days later (20w2d). The girl told me that with those options, she'd recommend waiting as they prefer moms to be at least 20w so they can be sure to the the right measurements. That's probably all the receptionist meant - it's too bad she didn't explain it better.

I was 19w 5d when I got mine. Everything will be fine. However with the sex, it depends on if the baby cooperates with you. Drink water before you go in. Cold water at that. Cold water always makes my baby boy move around.

If your OB was confident, then I'd go with that. As far as the receptionist/front desk/whatever she was, don't let that get you down - she's not the Dr!

My ob does anatomy scans between 18 and 22 weeks. We are going at 19 weeks for ours. It doesn't matter if you are plus size or skinny.. If the baby doesn't want to show his or her goods, he or she will not. lol It has everything to do with the baby's cooperation. I'm sure you will be okay! Good luck!

I haven't had my A/S yet, but at my dating ultrasound, they had no problem finding the baby (and I am MUCH more plus-sized than you.)  I can't imagine you would have a problem finding out the sex unless the baby won't move into the proper position.
