XP: Screw that noise... wow.

I'm watching Labor and Delivery or Baby Story. I get them mixed up. But the nurse tells this 10cm dialated, heavily contracting mom "The doctor is at home, you can't push yet. If you push, you'll deliver and the doctor's not here. You have to stop and wait."

Ummmmm. No.

Now I've never had a full term baby come out of my vagina, but I'm gonna go right ahead and say that this nurse should be socked in the face. Stop.

Just tell your body and the little person inside you who is descending the birth canal to just hold up a sec while the doctor gets her commute on.

FUUUUUUUUCKTHAT. I just cannot.

My little miracle.

I watched that one as well. I remember when I was ready to push with DS, they told me to wait, they had to get the doctor. I could barely handle those MAYBE 2 minutes, I can't imagine waiting for a doctor to drive to the hospital from their home.

That's so rediculous. This is why I switched to a midwife, I'm sure there are great OBs out there, but the 2 I've had in the past didn't listen to me, when i said i go fast and didn't even show their face in the delivery room until the last 2 minutes to catch the baby. That's why when my friends have said "I dont like Dr. x in my practice, I hope I don't have him when I deliver " I'm like, it really doesn't matter, you probably won't see them till the last minute and you won't care who's there by then.

The nurse told my mom to wait for the doc for me.  The nurse had to catch me.

And sometimes there is no other OB.  Brought to you by the person that lived someplace with 1 OB in the county.  The OB that had an appendectomy when I was 38 wks.

Nurses are trained to catch. To me, it seems more reasonable to listen to your body rather than wait for someone with a degree to show up for two minutes. I'm glad I've moved to the midwives in my practice.

Nurses are trained to "catch" but at some hospitals they aren't actually allowed to touch the baby it just lands on the table then once it is out the nurse can pick it up ( I'm in nursing school and one of the hospitals we go to has that policy). Also some doctors get very pissy about it and it just makes eveyones life and job easier to try and hold it off.

seems to me that it isn't easier for the person giving birth, though! (I work in healthcare, too and sometimes what's easier on the staff due to policies and red tape is not what's best for the patient.)

Thats about the dumbest thing I've heard! (the hospital policy, I mean) if you gave birth in the car, would the paramedics tell  whoever's there with you to let the baby fall out?  That craziness sounds like bureaucracy at its finest! :eye roll:

There was another baby being born right before I started pushing with my DS. The nurses told me not to push while we waited just a little longer for the doctor. Then they let me start pushing before the doctor actually arrived. I heard one nurse quietly alert the other nurse to get ready to catch. The doctor ended up getting there in plenty of time and DS actually need a little bit of vacuum assistance to come out.

Am I the only one who would likely push anyway? Does that make me a horrible person?

No. Sometimes, it's like you can't control it. Your body takes over and basically forces you to push. I remember when delivering my DD, the nurse was on the other side of the room doing paperwork in between my pushes. Well, a contraction came on quicker than expected, and I yelled at her to hurry up bc my body was pushing. I don't know that I would have been able to not push.
