Morgan

Morgan - girl or boy name?

Both DH and I like the name Morgan, but he would want to use it for a girl and I'd only use it for a boy (although I know it can be used for either gender). Do you all find Morgan to be more masculine or feminine - or do you think it truely goes either way?
  • Boy Name (14.6%)
  • Girl Name (43.8%)
  • Can be used for either (41.7%)

All the Morgans I know are girls.  It's one of those that used to be a boy's name, then it went neutral, but now I think its all girl.

To me, this is one of the few names that legitimately works for both.

In 2011, there were 3,640 girls named Morgan and 469 boys (nearly 8:1 in favor of girls).

Morgan is a little bit of an odd case because usually when a name goes over to the girls, it doesn't go back to the boys. That's mostly true with Morgan, but it hit its peak "girl-ness" in the 1990s and has drifted slightly back toward unisex usage recently. It's still used much more frequently for girls, but not quite as overwhelmingly as in the '90s. This makes me think that it is a bit different from names like Ashley that went wholly over to the girls' side.

1965: 44 girls, 208 boys (1:5)

1975: 113 girls, 283 boys (1:2.5)

1985: 2,279 girls, 683 boys (3:1)

1995: 10,876 girls, 1,257 boys (9:1)

2005: 6,743 girls, 900 boys (7.5:1)

My BIL is a Morgan so I tend to think boy, but it is one of the few neutral names for me.

I have a boy Morgan, and no one has seemed weirded out by it. I have even introduced him to strangers as Morgan without using he/him and no one has seemed confused about his sex. But I live in Canada and it seems that Morgan is more popular as a boys' name here than it is in the US. My province's baby stats show that the 2010 ratio was about two girls to one boy, if I remember right.

As someone suggested with the stats above, I wouldnt be surprised if the name started trending more to the boy side. It seems that this question is asked relatively often on these boards, and in my very unscientific observations there seems to be fewer "girl only" responses as time goes on compared to when we were first thinking about the name close to a year and a half ago, which would suggest that people are thinking of it going either way.

I prefer it for a girl, but think it can be used for both.  I have only known one male named Morgan - he was made fun of but adults he worked with...they called him "Big M, litte organ"

I voted both, but I like it way, way more for a girl.

This is what i think immediately....

Morgan for a girl=strong, awesome, friendly, smart...what i would want for a daughter

Morgan for a boy=wimpy, winey, last picked during gym class
