Is it possible to drink too much water??

I have known I've been drinking plenty of liquids this whole pregnancy. I'm just more interested in drinking something -- juice, smoothies, water, club soda, whatever -- than eating a big meal for some reason. It makes me pretty uncomfortable sometimes with having to pee every other second, but I can't help it.

Yesterday, I counted ounces and I hit over 160 oz of liquid. Mostly water. But still, holy crap that's a ton of liquid. Do you think too much is bad??

I'm scheduled to deliver on Monday, so I guess it's not a big deal at this point...I just was curious. Anyone else addicted to liquids?? I guess the bonus is that I'm definitely not swelling anywhere. :)

It is possible to drink too much water, but I believe you'd have to drink a very extreme amount.  Are you drinking just plain water or something with electrolytes (Gatorade or Smart Water)?

ETA:  During my twin pg my OB wanted me to drink 1 glass of water for every hour I was awake, so that was at least a gallon every day if you figure that you sleep for 8 hours and are up for 16 (and yeah right, what 3rd tri pg woman gets 8 hours of sleep).

ETA2:  I just did some googling, it's called "water intoxication".  Apparently a healthy adult kidney can filter up to 15 liters of water each days, so it's not so much as "how much" you drink, from what I read it's more of "how fast" you drink it.

The doctor seems to think that I may have been drinking too much water... I was drinking 8 liters a day and my AFI was 6.  They said to drink less and to eat a bit more salt and I followed their instructions.  My AFI went up to 12. They don't know that this is actually a cause--effect relationship but they are betting that I had changed the concentration gradient in my kidneys not allowing me to retain enough water to keep my fluid volume up and therefore pass to the placenta.  This is just one case and as I said, they're not sure if it's the cause or not, but I am now down to drinking 4 liters a day.

It looks like water intoxication & hyponatremia are only really concerns for infants & extreme athletes. In adults the problem is going from dehydrated to guzzling water which can affect sodium levels in the body.

I probably drink 80-100 ounces of water every day, and that's just water. I'm not including any other source of water in my count and so far I've been fine! I think the rule is if you're thirsty, drink and don't worry about how much you're drinking.

"a 28-year-old California woman died after competing in a radio station's on-air water-drinking contest. After downing some six liters of water in three hours in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" (Nintendo game console) contest" - that's a lot of water in 3 hours.

The totally sad part of this is that multiple people called into that radio station warning then of the danger of the "game" they were playing. If I'm not mistaken, thee water intoxication led to severe acute hyponatremia, leading to her brain swelling and death. I think she had 3 small kids. The people at the radio station lost their jobs.

It's totally possible to drink too much water, even without being an athlete.  I drink a bunch of water not pregnant and increased my intake thinking it was good for me.  I was dizzy and light headed all the time, so my doctor sent me to a dietician who promptly told me to lay off the water.  Apparently I was flushing electrolytes right out of my system.  I now stick to around 100 oz and haven't had a problem since.  If you're not feeling any ill effects, though, I wouldn't think it's a problem.

Well technically, yes. But you would have to drink an insane amount of water in a short time.
