Doula ?

anyone using one. I have been doing a lot talking with friends who have recently had babies and a couple of them said they loved having one. Any thoughts on this?

It's always darkest before the dawn. So if you're going to steal your neighbor's newspaper, that's the time to do it. Daisypath Anniversary tickers

Yep, I have one. She also taught our childbirth class and is a LC. I decided to hire her when I figured out there was no way I was going to be able to have a midwife. My husband and I really like her and are looking forward to having her help us through labour. We feel like it was the right decision for us!

I have one. I think she will be a great asset for us seeing as we are first timers, no one in my family has had an unmedicated birth and we have no support from our family.

Yes, I have a doula. She has been really nice. In fact I just got done with my prenatal massage that was included in my package. Super fantastic actually! I am really really hoping for a med free VBAC. I did research and it states that doulas help your chances a lot in being successful. So, we shall see when the time comes!

I really wanted one, and we actually had one lined up.  But unfortunately, one of my dogs had a medical emergency this weekend, and it came down to his medical treatment or my doula.  Guess who won. :)

my hospital has a volunteer doula program, so all I have to do is tell them when I'm on my way in that I need one, and I will be taking advantage of that for sure

YES!

Not having one is one of the biggest things I wish I had done differently with DD so I flat out told DH this time around that I am having a doula-no negotiation!  Last time I had done bradley classes with DH (very centered on the partner being the labor support person) and it was completely pointless.  DH had no idea what was going on, no idea what to do to help, no idea of anything.  He completely shut down and was absolutely no help.  I had to remind him to get the camera after he went all the way to the car just for my contact case (he "didn't think" about just bringing the whole bag up).  As much as I was hoping that he could step up to the plate I really should have known-medical stuff goes right over his head and he gets overwhelmed with that stuff easily despite his best intentions.

Fortunately I found a doula that used to be a labor and delivery nurse so I'm really happy that she will know not only about labor but also about what the nurses are trying to do and why so she can be a better buffer between what actually has to happen vs. what usually happens during a labor.

Yes! And I think it's helping me feel more calm and supported and less fearful than I would have been going it alone! They really are there to solely support you and they can really be beneficial to stopping any unnecessary interventions or simply helping you have the birth of your wishes. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I do plan to have my doula there. Personally, I think having one is right for me. Maybe it's not for everyone but I think if you can find a doula you feel comfortable with I'd say go for it!

In my child birthing class they say that  the thing the moms remember most about the birth was not the pain, but how supported they felt and how involved they felt in the decisions that were happening.

Despite this, I was really torn about it, mostly because I didn't want to have to pay the extra money but after thinking about how we spent thousands of dollars for our wedding which was like 6 hours, why isn't it worth it for me to spend a few hundred to have some guidance and comfort in the dozen or so hours I'll be in labor right?

The woman I chose is my prenatal yoga teacher, is also certified in reiki and just has a very relaxing vibe about her. I'm SO GLAD we have her because not only does she support me when I may be in moments of weakness during the event, but also my husband when he needs to take a break from supporting me during and between contractions.

I also don't know what midwife and doctor will be there for the delivery because of their rotating schedules, so it also makes me happy that I will be building a relationship with my doula who will be there for the whole thing.

My husband actually pushed for us to hire one. He figured that it just made sense to have someone there who's experienced in birth. I don't want my mom in the delivery room as she brings chaos with her wherever she goes and is not comforting to me. I love our doula and she's actually the head of the volunteer doula program where we're delivering (though we're paying for her services). She's been a great resource and comfort as I seem to get a new complication or bump in the road every week. She's coming for our first prenatal visit at our home next week and I couldn't be more excited! 3 prenatal visits and 2 postpartum visits. Plus, unlike my OB, she will be with me throughout my labor and her sole job is to take care of me and hubby.
