HSG experiences?

Our doc does the HSG as a matter of course when planning iui's.  I've heard personally from friends who have done it that it ranges from "discomfort and feeling yucky all day" to "5 minutes of hell that was over quickly".

I have a fairly sensitive cervix.  I had an invasive/internal pap done this past summer and cried + swore at the doc like a sailor during it without realizing it.   With that, I'm fairly certain the hsg is going to hurt.....

What were your experiences?   And how long did you feel crappy?

Unfortunately it looks like the only day I will be able to get it done (my doc only does them on Tuesday & Thursday, between days 5-10) - is the same day as an evening event I have for work.  If I get it done by 4pm, do you think I'd be good to go by 5:30pm for the dinner?

Same sex couple - 31 years old - donor sperm, carrying our first due to dx of DOR/POF in Nov. 2012.

Low AMH, AFC - 6, Normal FSH, SS-A (RO) Antibodies (Autoimmune issues), tubes clear

IUI# 1 - December 19 - Done too early (24-36hrs before Ovulation) - BFN

IUI# 2 - January 16 - Femara + HCG trigger - BFN

IUI# 3 - March - 150-225iui Puregon, stimmed 16 days with only 1 follicle - nearly missed surge so no trigger - Progesterone - BFN.

IUI # 4 - "Pokey-Pokey" April 9 - 100mg Clomid CD 3-7, HCG Trigger + Progesterone - 2 follicles! IUI done after one O'd and before the 2nd one did. - BFN

...Moving on to trying to get my Partner pregnant with donor sperm. Hoping to come back and try with me, or do IVF with my DP's eggs eventually. My nerves are too frazzled for now

I had my hsg last year and I honestly didn't have a bit of problem. I could have driven straight to work and worked all day. I hate paps and I hate the speculum so I was preparing for an awful experience, but I didn't have any problem. It was like a pap with the speculum in a little longer. No pain for me, no discharge or bleeding afterwards at all. HTH. Don't get too worked up about it, it wasn't nearly as bad as I have heard. I hope your experience is the same,

Mine was in the hurts like hell for 5 min catagory.  Once they were done & all the tools were out of me, I was a lot better.  Sore & spotting throughout the next couple days, but nothing unbearable.

I probably shouldn't respond, because I don't want to freak you out, but I had a horrible experience with my HSG. I also didn't research anything about it beforehand. Just make sure you have an experienced doctor perform it. It sounds like your RE will be doing it, which is wonderful. Take pain meds before, and have someone there to drive you home. I had some guy in the radiology dept. who I am pretty sure had never performed one in his life, let alone put a speculum in. The whole thing was a disaster, and since he messed each part up, he had to do it twice. Meanwhile, I was screaming bloody murder, shaking, crying, and drenched in sweat. My doc never mentioned taking pain meds or having someone to drive me home. I looked like I had just been gang raped by 15 men in a dark alley. I was in pain and bleeding for 3/4 days. I would never have been able to go to an event that day. I think everyone has very different experiences. Hopefully your experience will be a breeze compared to mine! GL!!!

Mine was probably a 7 on a pain scale. The speculem always hurts me, and when they inject the dye I cramped pretty hard. I took a pain pill before and after and was just sore for a day or so with light bleeding. I wish you the best and remember eveyone is different.

First- I have no tube issues.  Mine was minor, I think the worst of it was when they put the cath in and pushed the liquid just because it was an unknown feeling.  Just a little cramping and barely any spotting afterward, I felt fine within an hour and even went to a wedding rehearsal several hours later.

I tell everyone that tells me that they are having this done to take a minute or two after it's done to sit up and just sit there.  I about passed out from standing too quickly.

Good luck!!  And remember to walk in there with a positive mind.

I have one girlfriend who described it as uncomfortable.

Her tubes were fine.

Another friend described it as "no big deal."

Her tubes were fine too.

OH HOLY HELL is how I would describe it.

Both my tubes were blocked. They increase the pressure as they put the dye in there in an attempt to flush out any blockages. Again---oh-holy-hell. One tube finally spilled "some" but, improperly, so they were dx'd as bilaterally obstructed.

I was down & out for at least the rest of the day. I took several Motrin about 30 minutes before the test to try and stay ahead of the pain.

Everyone is different, but mine was fine. No pain and minimal spotting and cramping afterwards. For me, the worst part was the anxiety of not knowing what it would be like. Hope yours goes smoothly, and even if it is painful it will be very quick!

I have had two.  Both times were okay.

The first time, I made my husband take me as I had read horror stories on the interwebs.  Its quite a drive to the RE's office, so I didn't want to be stranded there if I was unable to drive home.  I was super anxious.  I took motrin prior to the test.  But really, it wasn't that bad.  I mean, don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of the speculum...  My RE numbs the cervix, so I didn't even feel them putting in the catheter.  It's awkward.  My right tube didn't spill.  But I have definitely had ultrasounds that were way worse than the HSG.

The second time, I drove myself.  Took motrin.  Wasn't anxious.  Right tube still didn't spill (surgery revealed it was kinked and adhered to my large intestine), but the test still wasn't bad.

Good luck to you.  I will say to take your own pad.  I didn't need anything heavy and I certainly didn't want to wear that brick of a pad the hospital offers you.

I don't really fall into either category....for me, it was mild cramping during the HSG itself and once it was over I was fine. No cramping, no spotting. Thats just me of course but I'm sure you'll be ok. Take a few Ibuprofen before you have it that should help a little :)

Totally not trying to scare you-I'm just being honest.  It was the worst pain!  But the good thing is it literally only last seconds.  I think it was also due to the fact that my left tube was blocked-so forcing the dye through there increased the pain.  I had some mild discomfort that day.  And the next day just some cramping.  Bleeding for a few days-but overall it was ok.  Good luck! Just remember-its quick!

TTC naturally since Nov 2010. Diagnosed with PCOS in June of 2012 Started seeing a RE June 2012 HSG showed a block left tube Hubby's SA showed a slightly low count everything else ok Three rounds of Clomid/IUI-all three rounds IUI were cancelled because follicles never matured. Both my HSG and saline sonogram were nightmares - way worse than the "mild discomfort" the technicians said it would be. The HSG was a little worse. During both I honestly had thoughts of "nevermind I don't want to get pregnant anymore if this is how bad it hurts to give birth."  I have a tilted uterus and of my 3 embryo transfers, one of them the dr had a really hard time, so maybe anatomically maybe there is something about me that makes them more painful.

That said, though, both were over in a few minutes and only mild discomfort for the remainder of the day. I used valium for the HSG which I would recommend and loading up on ibuprofen as well. Best of luck.

I hope yours is not as bad, but maybe if you prepare for the worst you will be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for sharing everyone :)

Yeah - I'm totally one of those "prepare for the worst and hope it's better" people....   Our clinic gave me two pills of Ponstan to take in advance of the appointment time to help prevent major cramping and reduce some of the pain.   I think I'll probably take a (low-dose) of Ativan beforehand as well to help alleviate some of my own stuff around it...

That said, it seems the consensus here is that most people felt okay after the procedure, so that's good to know!  I will just try to take the afternoon off work and still make sure I'm present for the dinner that night.  It's a once-a-year celebration for the students I work with, so it's a pretty big deal :)

The HSG was certainly uncomfortable for me - it would be pretty bad for a few seconds and just when I thought I couldn't take it - the pain would stop. I would say that it is only super uncomfortable for a total of 1 out of the 5 minutes. It will honestly be over before you know it. You can certainly return to normal work after if you aren't too cramp.

Good luck!
