To Call.. or Not To Call?

i had a ob appt on Monday, dr checked and said i was 3cm dilated and 50% effaced. he told me that i'm at a point now where they won't stop labor but they don't encourage it either.

i lost my mucus plug yesterday morning and i have been having contractions on and off since then. today the contractions seem a little more painful and crampy as apposed to just feeling "tightness" yesterday. i also can't seem to keep anything down, not even toast.

i'm just wondering if i should call the OB or if i should wait until the contractions are at 5-1-1 which is when he told me to come in. I'm a FTM and i don't want to be "that patient" that calls with false alarms multiple times.

I think usually if they don't consider you full term [most use 37 weeks] they want to hear from you as soon as you're contracting vs. waiting for 5-1-1 because technically you're premature. I would call and let them decide though.

I would also call if I were you.  I wouldn't worry about being "that patient" because that's their job....they see those patients all the time :)  Even just for peace of mind I would call, the worst that can happen is they tell you to wait it out at home and see what happens.  Good luck!

I would do what the doctor told you to do.

This.

Also, are your contractions timeable?  Especially at the point you are it's normal to have more intense BH contractions or even some prodromal labor (which is kind of like between BH and active labor, it can start and stop, sometimes it causes slow cervical change, sometimes nothing).  If you're having contractions that aren't timeable I wouldn't worry about it at all.  Now, if you start having these more intense contractions and they become timeable you might want to give your office a call just to let them know what's going on.  The "5-1-1 rule" exists because most people aren't even in active labor before then.

Honestly, with the throwing up, and the loss of the MP, it sounds to me like you might be in the beginning stages of labor. I would wait it out a little more, and see if those cramps get any worse, or timeable. If you feel yourself getting dehydrated, then you definately need to go in.

Wow! I could have written this myself. I'm 35 weeks as well and 3 cm dilated on Monday at my appt. My doc also told me she wouldn't stop labor. She said make an appt. for Monday, but I'll probably see you by this weekend. She didn't seem at all concerned that I'm only 35 weeks. I'm a STM and my first came at 36 wks 6 days, so I guess they are expecting this one to be early as well. Anyways, Monday & Tuesday I was up from 10-3:30 with painful contractions. They were about 4-6 min apart, but only lasting about 30 seconds. Called my doc she said to wait until they are at least 45 sec. in length. I've had the contractions on and off since then, but they will be really strong and then just stop out of nowhere. I have been losing my mucous plug and I've felt nauseous and had diarrhea as well. It's driving me crazy. So we'll see. Good luck to you!
