Pregnant Police Officers?

I am currently dealing with some discrimination issues at my department. If you are or were a police officer, does your department have a "pregnancy policy" in place? I have done a ton of research on the laws pertaining to pregnant women in law enforcement, but we have no policies in place and it's an uphill battle everyday for me with the administration. Any help would be appreciated! If your department has a "pregnancy policy" can you please respond back with the name of your agency or message me so I can do some more research to make my work environment fair. Thanks.

Oh goodness, I was dealing with this in our fire dept, I am a firefighter/medic, and once everyone found out I was pregnant they wanted me to set a day to go on leave. I did some research in our SOP's and by laws they has no policies in place for pregnancy. When I got further along like 7 months they wanted me to take leave and I fought it. All i can say to you of you look in yalls policies and there is nothing concerning pregnancy I would bring it to the head person in charge as sit down and explain to them that there is nothing there concerning pregnancy and until your doctor says you shouldn't work anymore or your not comfortable. That's what I had to do, and they listened to me when they had nothing to stand on.

Me! Me! Me!
I'm a State Trooper so there's very strict policies in place on a state level.
I didn't ever feel discriminated against. It's clearly written out in policy what I had to do. As soon as I found out I was to notify a supervisor, which I did. I was able to give them about 10 days, since I found out and left on vacation within that week, to process it and do their part. I'm the first female in my district so this has been a learning experience. As soon as I got back from vacation I went back to work for one day. I was told I had a few options. I could continue to work but would be considered a high risk employee and pretty much they are required to have someone check my every move. Working wrecks and arresting people would be hard because I would be required in some sort of the sense to have someone there. My supervisors asked me to consider going on limited duty where I become a secretary for the duration of my pregnancy. My husband who's a Trooper said it was up to me but in the end he would feel more comfortable with me safe. So I went on limited duty.
They joke on me that I won't come back but they let me pick my shift choice next year and I chose to work all days and my husband to work all nights. I explained my choice to EBF and they said I shouldn't have an issue working around my BF schedule. I'm pretty much my own boss so if I don't have a wreck or in the middle of processing someone I can go home to BF or pump.

***Velazquez***  What state do you work for? I plan on calling around to get copies of policies to work off of so either I or my Commander can put together a policy for my department.

I'm also in law enforcement at the State level in PA.  My work is a little different than a Trooper though so the rules/policies aren't as clear as far as the work goes.  My supervisor has been pretty good though and let me know that I should only do what I'm comfortable with.  I only make arrests that are surrenders at a magistrate office and always have someone with me.  I'm 7 months along and no longer participating in search warrants or other high risk aspects.  I travel throughout 26 counties so around January they'll cut my travel back as well.  Overall, I've been pretty lucky.  My only tricky part is dealing with HR having to submit crazy memo's, etc.  Good luck & Congrats!!

I work for Louisville Metro Police Department in Ky and we have a policy on pregnancy and it is pretty much you work until you feel like doing light duty.  For some people that is 6 months and other that is as soon as you find out depending on the circumstances.  I left at around  8 weeks mainly because I work in a very busy area and was really not interested in fighting.  Also because of a female search I did while pregnant where I searched a female and she had an exposed crack needle in her crotch.  Hepititis, AIDS, or healthy baby...hmmm easy choice:)  As far as law enforcement and pregnancy I would recommend looking it up online there are a lot of articles exposing departments of discriminating against female employees who get pregnant.  It is a uphill battle and I'm sorry that you are going through this.  I am lucky to work in a larger department where a female being pregnant is NBD and they move you to a desk job (modified detective work) and no one cares or says anything.
