Skipping HPTs? (TTCAL/loss related)

I supposed I should post this on the TTCAL or something related, but I haven't really been posting there, so I am going to ask you all.

My C/P was of the "fading HPTs" variety. I watched those lines get lighter every day until you could barely see them, and then started bleeding. Now, the thought of taking an HPT and ever actually trusting it again is hard for me to imagine. I would much rather be late, have betas done, and hear that they are doubling, or aren't doubling, instead of obsessing over POAS and what that may or may not mean.

Does anyone do this? I know, I need to ask my OBGYN, and I have an appointment next week, but I thought I would ask to see if anyone else does this.

That is exactly how my C/P was .. and I am scared too now to test. I of course don't want to see a BFN but if I do see a BFP im also going to be scared to get excited .. That is why I am on the 14DPO bandwagon now with testing..

I told my husband I would have to be like a week late before I would ever POAS, but now I'm wondering if I can just skip them all together.

I know many IFers that do this.  For me I still needed time to process a BFN alone before beta, even after my c/p.  I don't think my OB will run a blood test unless you've taken an HPT first (my RE might on a natural unmonitored cycle, but probably not without some questioning).

That is pretty much what happened to me. I know I shouldn't have tested, especially after the digital popped up with 'pregnant' but I did anyway and the lines just kept getting lighter and then the bleeding started. Luckily, my first appt was for the day after so they took urine/blood samples and confirmed m/c. I have the same fear if I do get a BFP. I'm still debating this month whether or not I will even test, or just wait to be late. Either way, I doubt that I would wait till I was late to call the doctor for a blood test and I doubt they would even do this.

The only thing I guess I can do at this point is test at home, and if/when I do another BFP, put the sticks away.

GL!

I kind of go back in forth on this.  I don't know if I want to know about another loss (if I get an early +hpt and then have another c/p)  or if I want to know asap so I can go to the doctor to have levels checked.

Just a suggestion: You might wait until you are late, take a digi, and if it says pregnant go in to your OBGYN and hopefully have them take it from there. That way, you can avoid seeing the lines and worrying about how dark they are.

I'm really sorry for your loss. I had a CP over the summer and have anxiety about testing, so I understand where you are coming from.

Mine was the same way. The hardest hpt for me was seeing "not pregnant" on the last digital i took since it meant i could no longer pretend my fading lines meant nothing. I still test occasionally, although not as early or often. When i spoke to my ob after it happened she had given me the option of checking betas and progesterone with my next bfp but cautioned that those numbers don't tell the whole story you can have great numbers and still have a loss or you can torment yourself with not so great numbers and still have a healthy take home pregnancy. In the end i decided i would make a game time decision and she wrote me a lab req for betas and progesterone every 48 hours to take in when i get a hpt. I think ff says that if you're charting and have your temps stay up for 18 days thats conclusive, so maybe your doctor could write an order like that and you could handle it that way?
Good luck either way, i just wanted to say i understand you feeling that way.

I have never had a CP, but I try to avoid testing until after I'm pretty sure AF is late, in hopes of minimizing my chances of getting an early positive and then getting AF. I don't know if that will actually achieve anything or not. I don't know that I would skip HPTs altogether, but I've never been in your position.

If it helps you, I say do it.

This is probably where I am headed. I never got a "pregnant" on a digital with my C/P. The thought of taking a FRER or a Wondfo makes me anxious.

I was just going to post something similar asking people what they do with regards to testing.  I am just starting TTC and am not sure if I should test early or not.  I guess if a person is having repeated cp's that would be valuable information to have but also tough to take.

I'm not sure if I should test before expected period, right when it's due or wait until it is a week late.

I should add that I'm not temping (at least yet) so I won't know an exact O date but if I go back to being regular would have an idea when my period is due.  And I do know the standard advice of test once a week or until CD 60 if it doesn't show.

If you don't have a history of miscarriages, I would just test when you expect your period is due or a couple days later. It really depends on your preference.

Thanks for the advice.  I think that is what I will do for now.  I don't have any history of miscarriage so I can't imagine how painful losses can be.  So its one of those things where I wonder if testing early to satisfy knowing and then finding out you've lost the pregnancy is worth it.

I probably shouldn't answer because I haven't had your experience but if I were you I would skip HPTs at least until well after AF is expected. And then after a BFP I'd probably get betas done if it's not too much trouble/expense. I would definitely not consider testing before AF is due because that's when people tend to see chemical pregnancies.

I am so sorry for your loss and I hope you get a sticky baby soon.

I'm on the other end, I would rather see the lines not get darker in the comfort o my bathroom and know the pg isn't viable then hear it via beta numbers on the phone in my office. Having the nurse tell you they haven't doubled - the hard cold scientific factual number, is so much harder to hear when you don't expect it. Being prepared for the number not to be great makes it a softer blow. Beta He!! is horrid. At least with BF-WTF's there's still some semblance of a thread to hang on to.

It all pretty much sucks though... I'm not sure any of it is easier to deal with than the other.

I like the digi idea. Unfortunately once you venture into the realm of progesterone or other medications during the 2ww (or ones need with a BFP), your hands are a bit tied in regards to testing.  That's the position I'm in at least.

When I had my CP, my OB said he was glad I knew I was PG because it should be part of my health record and the CP would "count" towards how many losses I have before an RE would see me. Where I live, REs seem to require 3 losses before they will see you. Because of this, I test 1214 dpo each cycle. Not very early, but hopefully early enough to catch another CP if I have one. I guess my interest in being aware of what is going on with my body overrides my fear of another loss! Good luck!

I have mixed feelings on this one, having had a miscarriage at 9weeks and a CP a positive pregnancy test no longer= take home baby for me and it probably never will. And as much as it would hurt to see another CP knowing I could skip out on even catching it if i waited longer to test. I also feel its important to know as much as possible about whats going on with my body in case there is a problem that needs to be fixed.

That being said I would think most doctors require a positive test before betas. My doctor makes me take another HPT in his office and only if there is an issue will he do betas. Your period can periodically be late for other reasons, I personally wouldn't want to be running to the doctors every time I *think* im pregnant and asking for betas without even knowing

FWIW, Loppy, you can't really trust the darkness level on any test. The lines with my son kept getting lighter and darker and lighter then lighter then lighter. Obviously, I didn't miscarry. Take a test, digi if you want, and then call your OB. Going in for a blood test without a positive HPT (or even a doctor pee test) is not a great use of resources.

I know it sucks, it is hard. I didn't believe my test at first after my loss either.

I know that's the rule, but watching them fade to negative and then miscarrying has made me a skeptic.

I know I'm going to have to test, but I'm going to wait until I miss my period. Instead of testing over several days, I will just go in for betas (and maybe progesterone depending on my convo next week with the doctor) instead of obsessing over HPTs once I get a positive. I know good betas are no guarantee, but for myself, I think it's better.

After my loss I have said that Im not going to even consider testing until Im VERY late and VERY sure its a possibility. Before this I would test with no signs / symptoms because I was so excited. Now I will test only when AF is very late (5+ days). And then if I do get a BFP Im going to stop my feet, yell, and pillage until my MW gets me in that same day. I want someone to hold my hand every second of my next pregnancy, if I ever have another.
