Short cry when falling asleep? And a bottle feeding?

My LO is 3 weeks old and was 5 weeks premature. Lately every time I lay him down he will randomly let out little short cries and make small fussing noises but he is basically asleep. Is this normal? I am a first time mama and feel clueless and overwhelmed!

Also, I have decided to switch to bottle feeding pumped milk instead of breastfeeding because I am finding it very stressful and I already suffer from anxiety and depression (went off my meds so I could breastfeed). How many OZ should he eat in a feeding? Also, is it normal to spit up when bottle feeding? Like when I try to burp him during a break in feeding. I think he is drinking it way too fast because he is used to sucking on a nipple. Any suggestions?

 Thank you for any advice!!

I pump exclusively and when I first switched to it, the baby would spit up a lot.  It just took a few days for him to get used to having a bottle and then it was no problem.

As for the little cries, if he's asleep, just let him be.  My LO is older than yours but he'll let out a little yell in the night sometimes and he's totally asleep.  it's nothing to worry about.  If he was in pain or hungry, he would really cry and wake up.

Yes, it's very normal for babies to let out cries in their sleep.  Just let him be, he'll eventually grow out of it.  As for feedings, I did the same thing.  I EBF for several weeks and my LO was underweight so I switched to EP so I knew how much she was getting.  Start w/ a little at a time and keep going until he lets you know he's done.  For instance, (so you don't waste precious breastmilk) start w/ an oz and see how he does. If he still seem hungry put another oz in and so on.  Then you'll be able to figure out how much it is to satisfy him.  Yes, LO's do spit up a little more when bottle feeding because of the air that's getting into their belly from the bottle. What kind of bottle are you using? That can make a difference, too.  Use a slow flow or level 1 nipple.  Anything else at this point will be too much, especially coming right off of the breast.  FWIW, we us the Playtex VentAire bottles.  We used to use the Playtex drop-ins but the liners were too expensive to keep buying when she was eating just a little at a time.  Both serve the same purpose though.

I'm not sure what you've discussed with your doctor, but I just wanted to mention that there are anti-anxiety and depression meds out there that are safe while breastfeeding.  I went off mine while pregnant, but went back on something right after I had him for my anxiety...  I'd be a basketcase without it. :)  It's worth talking about and considering with your doctor if you haven't already, especially since having anxiety/depression before puts you at a higher risk for PPD and PPA.

Thank you everyone so much for the responses! It is all very helpful!

And I have looked into other options for meds while breastfeeding but they were ones that I had either tried before and didn't like or after researching the side effects I decided it would not be worth trying. So if I do decide I need to go back on meds, I will go back to what I was on. And then have to switch to formula.

Thank you again everyone!

My LO still spits up, that is normal. He spits up constantly! You should be worried if your baby seems in pain or is actually vomitting. Spit up dribbling out of the mouth isn't something to worry about. Also, make you sure you have the smallest nipple size you can buy so he's not taking in too much. I still use a size 1 for my 8 1/2 month old because he will spit up a ton if I go any bigger.

Did your pediatrician give you any suggestions about how much to feed? If your baby is premature, I would think a doctor would be following him and helping you out with these questions!
