Anyone passing on your fave name due to popularity?

I know it shouldn't matter, but I just can't get over the fact that my absolute favorite girl name, Sofia, is now the #1 name.

I love it, but I just can't do it.  Anyone else feel like this?  Anyone naming her despite it?

TIA!

Quite a few, but the hardest one was Jacob. It's been number 1 for way too long and number 2 in our state for just as long. I love it, but not enough to have him grow up with 10 others in his class.

I wouldn't do it but that's me personally. Certainly many do. I don't like overly popular names (yes, I know that sounds silly coming from a mother of Oliver & Lucy). My son was in the 200's (yes, still popular but not crazily so) when I named him & it's now 78! It's a bummer loving a name & it rising to the top 100. Once again, that's just my personal feelings on the topic.

I had a really hard time deciding whether or not to go with sofia regardless of popularity and in the end I decided that I love the name enough to look past it. I'm really glad I went with it for my daughter...I cant imagine her being anything else.

Nah. I've got a Jackson, and I love his name.  I know it's popular, but so what?  That just means even more people love it when I tell them what his name is. lol  I know he could have kids in his class with his name.  I had kids in my class with my name, it was never a huge deal.

The only reason I might change my mind would be if we had a super common last name, but we don't.

I love the name Jackson and it was the only name we could agree on for a boy. I didn't care about it's rise in popularity. My daughter (Natalie) had her name coming since I was 10 years old... So I did not let the new rise in popularity stop me for her either. Even if there are 10 others in their classes, my children are unique and special and even if their names are common, it won't make them any less of individuals. At least, that's what I told myself to not feel bad about using popular names. :P

We chose Owen knowing full well it was rising in popularity. But we love(d) it anyways.

Also, Norah is on our short list if/when we have a girl. It was my great-grandmother's name and we both love it.

Unique is great, but I think timeless is better.

My DS is named Benjamin and there are 2 in his class (and it's ranked in the 20's when he was born) and 2 Avery/Averis.  No Jacobs though!

Sophia and Emma are my favorite.  However, I won't use them because I don't want them to be one of many in their class.  Just can't do it.

We're not TTC just yet, but I thought I would give MO. I'm in love with the name Charlie/Charleigh for a girl and it is becoming very popular. I wouldn't hesitate to use that name if we still love it when our LO is on her way.

Also, my name is Jessica. There was always another one. I really didn't mind it. I now work with a woman who is also Jessica and she and I joke about it often, but neither of us are bothered by it.

Hope this helps!

DH and I have tossed around the names Abigail and Liam, but, even though they're great names, we'll probably end up passing on them due to their popularity.

In my high school class I was 1 of 11 Michelles.  We only had about 150 kids total so we were always in class together.  There are only so many nicknames before you just want to change your name.  I like many popular names (like Olivia and Abigail). but doubt I'll use them as I don't want my child to have to share a name to the point of hating the name.

I guess personally for me I will use a name if I LOVE it regardless of popularity.  Don't settle for 2nd or 3rd choice because there could still be a few in your child's school or daycare regardless of SS Name Ranking.

Totally. One of mine is also Sophia after a grandmother, but I just can't do it. I have a not-so-popular name and always felt sorry for the kids that were one of 12 Nikkis or something. There's so many good names, I'd just rather move on and pick another. Id' still use a god name for a middle though, no matter how popular.

I've loved the name Sophia and Owen for years but we have 2 boys and went with family names for them, I am due tomorrow with #3 (yes and still no definite name) and now DH loves Sophia and I'm thinking its way too popular now, he says who cares we don't know any and none of our neighbors have any so they won't be in school with tons of  the same names.  Owen I would still use just because we don't have any in our area and I see names like Aidan and Liam staying much higher in number (again, in our area... I know 4 Aidans and 3 Liams).  My MW says I will be going late again, so we have a few days, so we will wait until baby gets here and decide then to go with Sophia/Owen or family names we have as plan "B"

I look at popularity when thinking of names. If its popular, I won't use it. I like Lily, Amelia, etc but they would never be in the top 5 for us because of popularity. Honestly I prefer names that I have never met IRL tho so I'm not drawn to the top names.

I pass on certain popular names because I don't want people saying oh like"insert character name here from popular movie/book". I like Jacob. It's a family name. But I wouldn't use because I don't want anyone making the Twilight reference.  Also, for DS, Christian (another family name) was on the table. But I could never think of using it now because I would get tired of the 50 shades of grey references...

I love my boys! (DS, Furbaby, and DH)

I'm actually the opposite. I would not name my child a name that is in the top 50. I was the only one with the name Skylar in my school all the way up to graduation. I took pride in that as a child and I loved my name.

I really don't want my child to be one of six in his/her class. Luckily, the majority of our names aren't very popular (with the exception of Wyatt and Norah, but those are for later down the road so we can revisit them at that time.)

(with the exception of Wyatt and Norah, but those are for later down the road so we can revisit them at that time.)

I find it so funny two people here have commented on Norah as being popular (think we're going with it). It is #263, #137 without the 'h' and combined it's #119. It's not "unique" but not a top 50 or 10. I've never heard it on someone IRL, but maybe it's just not an East Coast name?

Anyhoo. I could do anything #50-100 if I loved it. Below #50? Probably not, and I'd never do a top 10 name.

For girls, yes.  I have a total double standard.  But I like so many girl names and need to scratch them off somehow.  If this is a boy he will be William.  And the popularity does bother me, but we've loved it for 9 years and it's after DH's grandfather, a classic name with many nickname options.  So it is what it is.

Now, if it were trendy, or even definitely rising due to the surge in old fashioned names, then I'd keep looking.

Yeah, yeah, I dumped Abigail and Evelyn due to popularity. The boy names I like are much lower on the list, so I'm still okay with them.
