Who do you judge?

I was a total Judgy McJudgerson today on FB. An old high school friend was ranting about how when she went to check on her (4 year old) son last night she was upset because she left him watching Nick Jr. and when she went back later on there was some comedian talking about penises.  She didn't realize that Nick Jr. turns into Nick Mom at a certain time, which is 10 p.m.

Maybe it's my FTM naivete, but I think a 4 year old should be sleeping at 10 p.m. not watching tv in their room unsupervised.  I stand by my judgment.

I know I'm not the only one.  Who are you judging?

Oh I'd judge her too.  My daughter will be 4 in March and is not left alone even in front of the tv.  That's just sad.  Kids need their parents not a tv.

And to answer your question honestly, I judge a lot of people, probably way more than I should.

Totally judging her. I cannot stand when people do not put their kids to bed at an appropriate time. Also I hate when parents blame the television for some of the things they put on there. As a parent WE are in control of what our children watch, it isnt the medias job to censor all television for our children because we dont want to take the time to do something about it ourselves. It is all part of teaching your child to follow rules and conform to society. Bedtimes are part of that as well. Call me old fashioned but children should learn early to have a strict routine. It makes them better and more organized adults. I can speak coming from a non structured household, and then moving in with my dad to have my world rocked with routines and rules. But I learned the importance of it all thankfully. Tsk tsk to her.

I'd judge that, too. My kids will not have TVs in their rooms. Like, ever.

I also judge people who turn their kids FFing before age two or before they have outgrown the car seat's limits. The AAP made the new rec for a reason, it stuns me when people are like, "Oh, yeah, I heard that, but why?" Or "Yeah, I heard that, but it was just changed recently, so whatever." Recent or not, it's based on research and concerns your child's safety. Anyone who doubts the reasoning for the new rec should google internal decapitation. /off soapbox.

While I don't want to jump on the "my kid will NEVER watch tv" train, I do think its pretty ridiculous she let a 4 yo watch tv unsupervised and let them fall asleep watching tv. That's going to create some terrible sleeping habits for life. But, there are worse things she could be doing. However this isn't something I would share on Fb knowing I'd be judged.

I don't leave my kiddo alone in front of the Tv, but my two year old never goes to bed before ten. I'm okay with this as we will be gradually moving his bedtime up before he starts school.

As far as the carseat goes, I turned ours around when my son was a year and a half. We don't have rear air in our Crv, and we live in Arizona. it's much more dangerous for my son to sit in 115 degree weather without air than to turn him forward facing at 1 and a half.

Sorry, I call bullshitt. You can start your small SUV five minutes before getting in and it will be sufficiently cool. Just like I start mine five minutes before getting in during the winter to warm it up. Not that hard and absolutely not an excuse to turn early, IMO. In case you can't tell, I'm a very big advocate of this and you will be hard pressed to find an excuse to make me think it's worth the risk of a child's safety.

It's crazy that so many people get defensive about this and start spewing excuses. If you did the research, you'd agree with me. I'm not making this shitt up. The AAP bases their recommendations on extensive research. The National Highway Safety Patrol and CDC back the recommendation.

Oh, bliss, look how you got me goin. lol.

Wow, I still stand by my decision. When I am home I absolutely could start my car five minutes before I get in, but I am not going to do that at the store, etc.... Judge me if you want, call me a bad parent, whatever. Why would I be looking for excuses to turn my kid around? It's not like it's hard to keep him rear facing otherwise.

I really try not to judge BC I know I'm not perfect but its really hard not too. I usually judge a good friend of mine BC her and her husband will leave their little boy alone with either grandparents every weekend to go party. Usually all weekend long.

Lol. No I wouldn't judge that. If not for Mickey Mouse and Dora I'd never get anything done. My DD is 2 and rarely goes to bed before 10. I think it's hilarious that people judge me for that. Good lord. There are many more things worthy of judging, IMO.

There are cities in CA that will fine you for starting your car and leaving the keys in it. Not always available for every one.

lol. A risk I'd be willing to take. Again, I'm not making shitt up about the safety issues here. A hot or cold car is not a good excuse. Period.

I'm not super mom by any means.  I just don't need to leave my child in front of the tv to get things done.  She is allowed TV time but I'm always in the room. She watches tv a few nights a week and never more than an hour.  I give her other activities to do while I get things done.  Playdoh, watercolors, blocks, quite reading time.  TV is not a babysitter and she gains little to nothing from it.  Plus, she has chores that she does while I clean like cleaning up after herself, gathering her laundry, setting the table, clearing the table etc.  Preschoolers are not helpless.

Now I feel bad. I don't think you're a bad parent. Everyone does what they think is best for their kid, and its not like you turned him at 8 months, which I've heard done. It just really riles me up that there is so much misinformation out there about this. I wish pediatricians would be more proactive about informing parents, or that there was more readily available information about the risks of FFing and why the extended RFing rec was made. In some European countries, it's the law to RF until age four. Why does te US suck so bad at safety? I'm just trying to get across that if you've seen the articles and facts I've seen, you wouldn't turn your kid, hot car or not. I'm sorry I took out my frustrations on you and I'm sure you're a wonderful mom.

oh thank you!! i was feeling like crap that i let my 3 yr old watch tv. seriously, i have things i need to get done too that can't only be accomplished during nap time. i love that i can set him up with caillou or something and finish up the dishes or take a shower. kids need to be independent and have their own alone time. no i dont set him up for hours on end or neglect him, but a little bit of tv time isn't going to hurt him!

Just being honest.  Btw, pretty much all women lactate if they try. I detest the reasoning behind formula feeding where women say "I just didn't get any milk".  No, you just didn't get any sleep so you were selfish and gave up.
