Drowsy but awake

I hate hearing this...make sure to put baby asleep drowsy but awake! Anyone else's baby not sleep unless they are put to bed fully asleep? We've tried putting our son in his crib after feeding and rocking, but he squirms and fusses or cries until we come rock him to sleep. I would love for him to fall asleep in his own. What's your experience? I know I'm not the only one disobeying this advice...

We haven't been able to do it either. She'll only sleep if we rock her and put her down fully asleep. We tried really hard last night but totally failed. I hate it! I really don't like having to rock her to sleep. White noise didn't work, she hates pacifiers, we let her cry for a little bit. Nothing. I'm curious to hear from others.

You shouldn't expect your baby to be able to fall asleep on his/her own until they're at least 4 to 6 months old.  Younger than that, they don't know how to soothe themselves and it's perfectly normal to feed or rock to sleep.

DD1 didn't fall asleep on her own until 11 months. Then it was amazing. I think it was a mix of me not knowing how to teach her and spoiling her as well as her demeanor. DD2 already falls asleep on her own. Not always, but I try often to see how it goes. I've learned a lot on sleep habits. I would keep trying, but don't feel bad about scooping him up to help out for now.

It takes time so don't get frustrated. My oldest didn't do it until 6 months or so.

My youngest can, but it took a lot of practice. What I did was nursed him to the part of his sleep cycle where he was smiling/laughing and would put him down. He would wake up briefly, look around and go to sleep. Now he's at the point if I put him down he goes to sleep without a wimper. Just keep practicing - your LO will get the hang of it.

I rocked my little guy to sleep until we sleepd trained at just under 6 months.  He was the same way - no putting him down awake, that's for sure!  It's not recommended to sleep train until 6 months, although it's a very personal decision.  You'll get through it - now there are days that I miss the rocking :)  Enjoy it - it goes quick!
