How do you pronoucne Beate?

My niece-in-law was just named this and I've only seen it written on facebook. I'm meeting the parents (and baby) for the first time soon and have no idea how to pronounce the name! Other extended family I talk to are only guessing. :-) Is there a common way?

bee-AH-tuh? BET?

I've always heard it said "Beh-AH-teh."

But I will admit I have never met a purely English-speaking person with this name, so maybe the pronunciation is different in English.

I knew a Swiss-German guy with the name Beate. He pronounced it Bee-AUGHT. Of course, he had a strong accent...

Excuse the pregnant hormones but before opening this while thinking you had it on your list I was thinking "it's pronounced move the heck on because it's not worth trying."

Then after reading your post I went through these:  Beet?  No, can't be right.  Maybe it's you-neek for Bette?  Maybe it's like beautiful?  No, no u.  And then I settled on Bee-TA.  I'm trying to get behindthename to load because I'm curious after reading the replies it seems to be a legit non-English name.

Well, since BTN wouldn't load I just googled it and found an entry on Wikipedia and listened to the pronunciation.  Bee-ah-tu is what it sounded like to me.  Really wouldn't have guessed an "oo" ending.

Interesting name!

ETA:  I figured it out.  The person for the Wikipedia entry's last name started with a U, so that was the "oo" sound I was hearing and it's a very subtle "te/ta" sound.  And I finally got BTN to load backing that up.  It's actually related to the Latin word beatus (think Beatitudes from the Bible), which is pretty neat in my book.

I've known a few women/girls who were named Beata, and pronounced their name bee-AH-tuh.

I've never seen it spelled with an E at the end, but I would still pronounce it the same way.

I've also only known people from eastern Europe (or their American-born children) to use this name.

I know two people with this name actually.

One is a Scandanavian exchange student in my class. She says Bee-AH-tuh.

The other is the mother of my Honduran exchange student's mother. She says Bee-dee. I'm not sure if that's right though or something got lost in the English translation for her.

Beate is a beautiful name!

I read it bay-tuh (like Beta), but I have no frame of reference.  I could see Bee-Ah-Tuh too.

It's either bay-ah-ta or bee-ah-ta, depending on how anglicized you want the pronunciation to be.  I personally default to bay-ah-ta.  I think it's a really pretty name.
