Pre Conception visit

Has anyone met with their GYN for a pre conception visit? I had read this can be a good idea for a check up, review of current meds and to discuss genetics prior to conceiving. I called my GYN to schedule an appointment and was shocked when they gave me a hard time about it. The secretary said they had never had anyone ask for an appointment for this reason. We are just starting to try to conceive and obviously it could be a while before we need an OB but I thought I was just covering all of my bases! Anyone had one of these appointments? Do I need to find an OB or midwife for this appointment?

Good luck, have fun, start a prenatal vitamin, and come back in a year if you aren't pregnant.

I've gone to my GP for my yearly exams for the last several years, so I made an appointment with a new doctor when we started to ttc. He's an ob/gyn, so I'll see him for my annual appointments, but he'll also be the doctor I see throughout my pregnancy. At my first visit with him we discussed ttc, but it was just a regular exam. If your current doctor is not the one you'll see while you're pregnant, you might want to find a new doctor now and have an appointment with that person.

ETA: I should also add that the reason I was in such a hurry to find a new doctor is because I have a clotting disorder that'll need to be dealt with as soon as I'm pregnant. I didn't want to have to spend time looking for a new doctor once I get my BFP.

Cautiously excited...

I just asked my Gyno when I was there for my annual, and he just told me to take PNV and since I had already quit smoking I was good to go. They really aren't necessary unless you have any health concerns or medications you need to discus if they are safe to take while TTC or if you get pregnant.

Only reason my OB knows is because I went in and had my IUD removed. Otherwise, I wouldn't have. I don't think its necessary.

I did it at the same time as my yearly. If I didn't have a specific reason for concern I wouldn't schedule an appointment just for that.

Unless you have an ongoing medical condition that needs to be managed differently during TTC and/or pregnancy you likely don't need to do this.

No I didn't have one.  I just mentioned I was going to start TTC at my last annual visit.

This for me too; however, I was lucky that I was due for my annual right before we started TTC. I don't think it's absolutely necessary, but she did talk about PNVs, vaccines, and genetic testing (I'm 34). I found the information helpful but I'm not sure it would warrant a visit just for that.

I asked my midwife about it at my annual exam. If you have concerns re: meds you're taking, health conditions, etc., then I would set up an appt (or an annual, if you're due for one) with an OB or midwife.

Yes I had one. Just spoke to my Dr. After my pap regarding supplements I should start taking, what I should do once I get my BFP, ect.

Edited honestly it wasn't necessary and she didnt tell me anything I didn't know. It was all apart of my yearly exam and I happened to mention we were going to start TTC.

I did not have a preconception visit, but had my annual at the 6 month mark. When I was there I told her we were trying and she gave me some tips and also talked to me about meds and a plan of action for when I get KU or if I'm not by the one year mark.

ETA: I'm on Zoloft for depression so I wanted to discuss that with her. Hoping I don't have to make that one year appt with her...but we are getting close :( I don't think a preconception appt is necessary but if it'll make you feel better, go for it!

I had one before TTC DS.  Primarily to discuss the meds I was taking for migraines.  I was glad I scheduled it; she took me off the meds and also did some bloodwork to see if I was a CF carrier.

I disagree with this. Most people aren't very educated about meds that can conflict with ttc, what to expect, etc.

l had a preconception visit because A) I have never been to an OB/gyn and wanted to meet someone face to face before choosing to go there later when I have a bfp and am frantic to be seen. B) I take anti-depressants. I wanted to make sure this provider was on the same page and agreed with my plan.

I got a huge folder of all kinds of resources- teaching me how to chart, what to expect, information about the frequency of miscarriage, genetic testing, Meds that are safe and not, and more.

I haven't yet but I plan on making an appointment on Monday. I just switched to new insurance so I got a new Doctor effective today. DH is military so I have Tricare, which means I have a primary care manager (Usually, a GP) who I will have to see for a blood test and to be referred to an OB once I am pregnant. I figured I might as well since I almost never go to the doctor and have a new GP, who I've never met. I don't know about other Doctors/Insurance but Tricare strongly suggests going to see your "primary care manager" if you plan on becoming pregnant.

What is there to expect?  Have sex and if after a year you aren't pregnant go back.  As far as the meds, that's a case by case basis.

I'm scheduled for one later in the month. I made the appointment for the OBGYN's website, and I was able to select "Pre-pregnancy checkup/genetic screening" as the reason from the pull-down menu. They must get them a lot then, right? I need a pap smear done anyways, so regardless it won't be a waste of my time.

I've never been prescribed medication that was dangerous during pregnancy that didn't say right on the bottle to not take if pregnant or nursing. It's really not that hard.

My points were to the OP as to why I personally thought it was valuable- not to make an argument. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

As far as what to expect: I think it's valuable for people to know the rates of miscarriage, the pros and cons of genetic testing, the table that shows fertility versus age, the avg. time it takes couples to conceive, etc. Just from my experience. Again, this is for the average person- most of you know more than what I learned in school. ;)

I take Celexa- the bottle says not to breastfeed without consult but says nothing about pregnancy. I've seen bad outcomes from women finding out they were pregnant and stopping their anti-depressants cold turkey because they didn't know better.

Obviously the basics are have sex, but obviously people have a lot of questions also about the whole TTC process, if there were not questions this board would be really slow. What does it matter if someone asks their questions here or to an actual doctor? If they want to pay a co-pay right on. I made one and thought it was a great use of my time and felt very excited and educated moving forward. it may not be something you would do or have done, but there is no reason to discourage someone else from doing it.

We had one of these but it was with a high risk OB because of my medical history.  For our situation, it was a must because I needed to change some of my medications prior to being able to conceive and it gave us a lot of piece of mind.  But I think for more "typical/normal" people it isn't as important.  I've known for almost 10 years this is how it would always be, plus I have specialists that had to consult for the pre-conception planning as well.  GL!

I talked to my OB/GYN about TTC when I had my annual, and this is the basis of what she told me. Honestly, I don't think it's something worth doing unless you have a medical problem you're worried about.
