Acid reflux and gas questions

How is acid reflux diagnosed? What are some of the methods of treating it?

Which works best for you: gas drops or gripe water? What else have you used to help you baby with gas?

They have 3 ways and all are pretty extensive. They only do it for the severe cases. One involves putting the baby under and doing xrays another involves putting dye into there system and then see where it goes. The 3rd one I cant remember right now. All babies have some degree of reflux though so they usually wont test unless its severe. Gripe water is basically to help upset tummies. It did nothing for my LO. She has both reflux and gas. Gas drops didn't do a thing either. The only thing that I have found to help her is Bio Gaia. It is a probiotic the helps the digestive system. After just 5 days it was a huge difference. For the reflux just put his or her bed at an angle and try to keep them upright for 20 minutes after feeding.

My daughter has sever acid reflux.  Around 10 days she was crying inconsolably until her face was purple, wouldn't sleep, was spitting up a ton and then screaming some more.  We took her to the dr. where she was diagnosed.  She was at that time put on .8 ml Zantac 2 times a day and it has increased appropriately w/ her weight gain.  We also keep her upright for about 20 mins after eating, her crib mattress is inclined also.  She still spits up A TON but it doesn't burn her throat like before the Zantac. At about 2 1/2 months per our pedi rice ceral was added to her formula/BM due to her spitting up so much and not keeping a lot down. That helped a lot too.

We have also used gripe water when she was particularly fussy.  Basically, it's a mix of herbs like ginger that naturally settle the belly.  It can be used for gas, colic but not for reflux.

As fas as gas drops go we used the Littles Ones gas drops and they worked great.  The only thing you have to remember is that gas drops are only for air that gets into the belly not intestinal gas.  For intestinal gas try doing bicycles w/ baby's legs, rubbing the belly, massaging.

@ Aisham where do you get the Bio Gaia stuff? My LO is extremely gassy. We have tried the drops, gripe water, bicycle with legs, you name it. She spits up a lot too, but that I know there is treatment for. We go for her 2 month check up on Wednesday. I think she has reflux because she spits up so long after feeding and cries before or after spitting up most times. So pretty much between the gas and reflux, she can be pretty miserable most days. I just want to make her happy and comfortable.

Thank you for the responses. They were very helpful. I'm mostly curious. I wanted to see what works with other babies and see if I could find new ways to help my son.

I don't really think my son has reflux but he does seem to get real gassy sometimes. He doesn't spit up much and can be difficult to burp. His belly use to get swollen and hard. The gas drops seem to work for him as long as I give them every 5-8hrs. I do keep his bed on an incline and hold him upright for awhile after each feeding. He doesn't like his belly rubbed and legs moved around.

@Anjvatier: Walgreens seems to best bet for online and in stores. Amazon.com has it too but Walgreens looked cheaper.

Two of my DS had reflux.  DS2 used Zantac until he was 1 and it worked out well.

DS3 has several food intolerances.  She he is BF'd I had to give up all dairy, soy, and eggs from my diet.  His reflux and other symptoms (extreme gas, colic, mucousy stools) went away with my diet change.

Hope you find something that works soon! :)
