too early to tranisiton to toddler bed?

LO is almost 17 mos. We are thinking of transitioning to toddler bed. Does this seem like a decent age, or have some of you had more problems doing it too early?

I am going to wait as long as I can to transition but our friends did it at 18 months. I really don't want her able to get out of her crib anytime soon lol.

DS has been on a floor bed since 15mo.  We had it in the room with his crib and started him in it when he fell asleep in the car for naps and we had to move him.  One night I put him in his crib and he said "No, bed".  He's slept better ever since.  He does get out of bed at night and comes into our room.  We have a small landing at the top of the stairs and make sure the gate is closed.  It was a very easy transition and we're glad we did it.

I plan to transition my son as soon as he can walk (no, he is not walking yet at 13 mos). We keep a gate across his bedroom doorway already so he can play in there, so I'm not worried about him wandering too far. I will just feel better about a bed when he is walking well. Not sure why. Maybe he will seem more like a big boy then.

We did it at 18 months and didn't have any issues.

We converted DS's crib to a toddler bed at 17 months because he kept climbing out of the crib.   I wanted to wait until later to make the change but since he was climbing out I didn't have much choice.  The transition wasn't that bad although most nights he falls asleep in the rocking chair in his room and I have to move him back to his bed.

We just made sure to extra baby-proof his room and took out most of the toys and just left board books and stuffed animals so he wouldn't get too distracted when he was trying to fall asleep. Otherwise he would just stay awake playing all night.

We plan on keeping DS in his crib until he can climb out or we need it for another little one.

We have had a rough transition (almost 2).  My little guy decided he HATED the crib and jumped out every single time.  I moved him to a toddler bed and now have to lay down with him every night to fall asleep.  He does wake in the night now and leaves so some nights I end up sleeping in there once he wakes up!?  I wanted to wait until he was old enough to understand staying in bed.  I would think...the older the better!?

WAY too early! Why the rush? It's a hard transition for a lot of kids, and after going through it once, my baby is staying in his crib until he's 8 :)

We moved when DD was 17mo so were in temp lodging and settled in our new house when she was 18mo at which time set up my old twin bed with a partial rail and a 3 step carpeted stool for DD1 and she did fine -- she would call for us but never got out of bed, took maybe 6mo before she would come into our room in the morning.  I think it depends on the kid.

We transitioned our son at 17 months because his baby sister was going to need the crib.  We started him out on the trundle bed of his big boy bed and then moved him up about 4 months later.  I didn't use a toddler bed, we have bed rails on his full sized bed.  He loves it.

I do plan to keep my daughter in the crib as long as possible and then convert the crib to a toddler bed when she's ready.

Personally I wont move Dd till she starts climbing out of her crib.  Ds didn't start till 2 1/2 and only did it once, so we transitioned a month before he turned 3.  It was stressful, I couldn't imagine doing it before 2 but thats just me.  I am a bit worried about Dd though, she's our climber and climbs everything!  But the mattress is on the lowest setting and her chin doesn't meet the crib rail.
