Weaning from bottles, share your experiences!!

My daughter's birthday is tomorrow! We made it! So as I am filled with all sorts of emotions, I'm also very anxious to take her off bottles.

Her one year check up isn't until Wednesday, so I haven't yet heard his suggestion. Right now she's on anywhere from 2-4 bottles a day, always having one about an hour after breakfast and pretty close to bedtime. I already have her started on whole milk which she drinks from a straw sippy and she really likes it.

I'm not good at just weaning her off slowly of anything, I'm kind of a push over. But if I pack up those bottles on Tuesday (I'm letting her have bottles tomorrow, she can be happy on her birthday) and put them in storage I know I won't be tempted to give in. Thoughts? Suggestions? Experiences? Please share!

We read stuff on the internet about showing the kids the bottles are going away as you collect them and then never offering them again. I though there was NO WAY that would work, as we had tried to omit the evening bottle a few times and there were tons and tons of tears. I just couldn't imagine that in the midst of all that crying he would be thinking 'well, the bottles went away today, oh well....'.

But don't you know it, we packed them up, said goodbye and that night said no more bottles, they're gone. He cried a bit (maybe 5min) for one night. That was it. I say go for it. We waited until he was 15mos. because we thought he was so attached and didn't want to go through the weaning, but knowing what I do now I'd say the earlier the better! Good luck!!!

I weaned DD off bottles about 3 weeks ago, she hasn't missed a beat.  By her last week on them, she was only getting 1 per day (midday, about an hour after lunch).  The only thing that changed was that she needed a bigger afternoon snack for a couple of weeks while she adjusted to not getting that bottle after lunch.  It was easy peasy.  Then again, I wasn't emotional at all about getting rid of them - I couldn't wait!

My son graduated to the "Wobblers" room at daycare at 11 months. It's a transitional room for 1218 monthers. They have a schedule and it's a "bottle free" room, but because it's transitional, they'll work with your kids on dropping the bottles. We figured moving to a new room was a good time to ditch the bottle, so that's when we started sending his breastmilk in straw cups. We sent in one empty bottle, just in case, but they only had to use it once. He's been bottle free since then!

We eliminated the afternoon bottle first, then the morning, and finally the bedtime bottle. It took about 2 month total, but by the time he was over a year old and eating a balanced diet, I wasn't as concerned if he refused to drink a sippy of milk every so often.

It was much easier to say no to bottles when we couldn't access them. He got really sick a couple times in months 13 - 14 and in desperation, I pulled out the bottles in hopes that he would drink something. We finally packed them up about 2 months after his birthday and never looked back.

I wrote about our transition here:

http://www.theaccidentalwallflower.com/2012/11/babys-transition-to-whole-cows-milk.html

It was pretty smooth sailing for us, and he doesn't seem to miss them at all. We still give him a sippy cup of milk right before bed.

GL!

We weaned DS from bottles at 11.5 months, since he'd be transitioning to the Toddler room at daycare right at 12 mo.  I didn't want him to be going through too many changes all at one time.

The worst part of the weaning process was the first time I gave him a sippy instead of his morning bottle.  He FLIPPED!  I was surprised actually, since he had been using sippies regularly.  Apparently he was really attached to that morning bottle.  I just stood firm and gave him a sippy again the next morning.  He squawked a little, but that was the end of it.

It was also hard on him when he saw other babies in his room at daycare still getting bottles.  He was out "out of sight, out of mind" kid, and he'd only get upset when a little girl had the same type of bottle he used to have.

All in all, it wasn't difficult  for us.  GL!

Fort he most part no more bottles yay!  Except at night, LO started waking up again (I think it's due to shots and teething) but he will  not accept a sippy cup or cup...only a bottle.  So during the day...no bottle...middle of the night, bottle.

It hasn't been a big deal during the day honestly, and he's done really well just drinking whole milk and eating his solids. The hardest part has been DH not sticking to the plan...which seems the case for everything we try doing (sleep trianing, etc.)...but I digress. Has she hused a sippy cup, or regular cup before?  During meals we just give a small cup he can manage, and the rest of the day he has a sippy/straw cup he carries around.

Yay! Thank you all so much for sharing. Harper has been drinking whole milk from her straw sippy for a week now, we have never put cow milk in her bottles. I really think showing her that the bottles are going away will probably work best for us. She is pretty well cognitively developed and I think she will understand. I'm okay with her having a milk sippy at bed, and she will be at daycare the majority of the days and they are really good at supporting whatever weaning style you choose. Thanks again ladies!!

Some of the comments say to give them a sippy cup at bed time, well what's the difference in giving them a bottle vs. sippy cup?

I've always let DS choose when to drop feedings. He weaned himself down to 2 bottles a day right before his first birthday. He's skipped his morning bottle a couple of times in the past two weeks too, so I assume that one will go away here in the next little bit. I'm not pushing him to drop the nighttime one. He'll get there when he's ready. I've never understood the pressure to have a baby totally off bottles between 12-15 months.

My DS did it on his own, too.  We were on our last part of formula and we had started mixing it 1/2 and 1/2 with WCM.  He refused his morning bottles, then would only take 1-2 oz of his bedtime bottle (all at 1 year exactly).  We had stopped the week before giving him bottles during the day and only offered sippy cups.  So when he refused the morning bottle, I packed up the bottles that day and never looked back.  He never missed a thing!  He's been off bottles completely since the week of his first b-day and we are completely all WCM.

I'm a mom of 3 boys. With all 3 of them I just got rid of all the bottles the night of their 1st birthdays. They all did just fine.
