Thoughts on Angel Care Monitor and tummy sleeping

Since the Angel Care Monitor is supposed to detect when babies stop moving/breathing, do you think it would be safe to put baby on his tummy to sleep? DS sleeps really well on his belly, and not at all on his back. Right now he is sleeping in a RNP next to our bed, but I'm ready to transition him to his crib.

Just curious what your thoughts are... Thanks!

We have the angel care monitor and love it! It works great and we know it works...our son has set it off a few times when he manages to squirm to the very end of his crib, completely away from the sensor pad. Tummy sleeping is a personal choice. I wouldn't, but that doesn't mean I will tell others not to. I know a mom who uses angel care and her babies were tummy sleepers and it works great for them. It is not recommended unless there is a medical issue. I have no tummy sleeping experience, but the monitor is great and is definitely worth the peace of mind.

Our baby is a tummy sleeper because of severe reflux.  We use the Angelcare Monitor and it definitely gives us peace of mind.  I highly recommend it.

DS1 tummy slept at 8 weeks without a monitor.  DS2 started tummy sleeping at 3 weeks with the Snuza.  Since then, we've had two false alarms so I know it works.  It gives me such peace of mind.

Our DD has been a tummy sleeper since she was 5 weeks old. She would not sleep on her back. A week after I flipped her to her stomach, she started sleeping through the night. Like from 9:30am to 6:00am straight. We do not use the Angel Care Monitor, but do have a video monitor and she sleeps in our room. I would talk to your doctor about it, if you don't feel entirely comfortable putting him on his stomach.

My opinion is, yes sleeping on the back is better and safer for the baby...but sleep is important for the baby. So if sleep isn't happening because he or she is on their back, it is your decision to make as you are the parent.

DS sleeps on his tummy because he has laryngomalacia and does not breathe well on his back. Right now he sleeps in a co-sleeper, but I bought the Angel Care for when we transition him to his crib!

I'm sorry... but no. I would not put your baby to sleep on his/her tummy, monitor or not. My friends baby died tummy sleeping. It is NOT a safe way for a baby to sleep. Sure, chances are slim that it will be your baby- but why would you EVER want to risk it??? Once your baby is rolling by his/her self, then they can make the choice about how they sleep- until then, you are her parent and it your job to keep her safe. If that means your baby waking up every 2-4 hours, so be it. Most babies do. Talk to your doctor about ways to get your baby to sleep better. Tummy sleeping is not the answer.

Important but unpopular FYI: there are no data that monitors such as Angel Care actually protect against SIDS and thus they are not recommended by the American Association of Pediatrics. Not that the AAP finds them to be harmful, but rather they are more helpful in reducing parental anxiety than preventing SIDS.

Just for your information, I have spoken to my doctor about this...and when your baby will only sleep 10 minutes at a time and then screams on her back, the doctor said to put her on her stomach. My daughter, my choice. And in fact ALL of our parents survived sleeping on their stomach. So don't judge people until you are in the situation. I also suggested speaking to her doctor before doing this as well. As I would never tell someone else to let their child sleep on their tummy. This was a very hard decision for me to make regarding the tummy sleeping and it was a last resort decision. And just so you know, I had a friend who lost a baby while he slept on his back. It can happen that way as well.
