Question for 2nd time moms...Taking care of a 2 year old after a c-section...

I had a c-section with DD because she was breech.  I am now pregnant again and my dr. is giving me the option of a repeat c-section or a vbac.  I am considering the repeat c-section because it can be planned and I already know what to expect.  My biggest concern about a c-section is taking care of DD afterwards.  DH will be home for 2 weeks but after that time, I am wondering if I will be able to lift DD in and out of her crib and the car.  Are there anyother difficulties that may come up after a c-section and taking care of my daughter?  BTW, I had a very smooth recovery with my first c-section.

2 weeks is about how long it took for me to able to lift stuff again. Ask your OB how long she/he recommends you not lift anything heavier then the new baby so you can have a plan in place.

I'm having a repeat csection. My son will be almost be 2 and 1/2. He is 32 lbs now so Who knows how big he will be in may but I've just been preparing him by not carrying him as much but we will just not go as many places for the first couple of weeks. Dh will be home the first 10 days or so. Plus your not supposed to drive for awhile anyways. I'm not too worried!

I was on weight lifting restrictions for 6 weeks.  (Follow your doctor's recommendations because I had massive adhesions from not following directions the first time).  I did a lot of prep work ahead of time.  I switched DS to a toddler bed.  We bought a toddler table/chair and practiced eating at it.  I got a laddered step stool and we practiced getting in and out of his carseat.  I also had help for the first 3 weeks.  Good luck.

My son will be 26 mos when this LO is born and I'll be having a RCS.  He's already like 32lbs so I'm in for it.  Other than the highchair, carseat, and changing station (dresser top); he can get to everything else.  I'm fortunate that my DH will be home the first week and my MIL and my mom will both be coming by a lot.  I can have DS1 eat at the table if I need to and I can't drive anywhere for the first week or two so the carseat is a non issue at the beginning.  I can change him on the floor or the couch and avoid the dresser top for awhile but I'm thinking I may just get a step stool for him to get up there for me since it's at a perfect height for me.  My main concern at this point is him kicking me in the incision.  OMG that's going to hurt.

If he will be home for 2 weeks after you shoudl be fine. I mean you still have to take it easy a little but after 2 weeks I felt good to go and was doing everything normal, just took me longer to get both girls ready and in the car, but as far as caring for both I did just fine.

It's great that your DH will be home for the first two weeks.  You should probably be okay after that.

When DS2 was born, DS1 was 21 mos. and still in the crib.  DH had to go back to work right away.  I was very lucky in that my mom and MIL took turns spending the night and helping out so I didn't have to lift DS1 in or out of the crib at all.  After two weeks though, I was okay to lift him.

I'm also having a RCS, and this has been really my biggest concern with it.  My recovery was pretty smooth with DD and I was feeling pretty normal by 2wPP, so I am hoping the same holds true this time.  DD is in, and will still be in, daycare during the week, so I won't have to worry about taking care of her by myself at home.  DH already does daycare drop off/pick up, so I shouldn't have to deal with getting her in and out of the car seat.  We'll have her switched to a toddler bed by then, and we already do her diaper changes on the floor (although I'm hoping and praying she's PT by then), so I think we should be OK.

when ds2 was born 1 was 11 months old and wasn't walking yet... he was also pretty big for his age... I think already 25lbs. I was told not to lift him for at least a month... after about 12 weeks, my doctor pretty much said, that if I lift him and feel tention, or a pulling, to stop immediaty. she said just try not to do anything I can feel is wrong. I would definitely plan on having some help around. GL!!

If your DD's crib converts to a toddler bed, maybe consider starting the transition now and getting the guard rail so she can get in and out on her own. My son will be 2 in a month and I'm only a few weeks behind you, so I've been preparing for the same thing. With DS, my hubby had to go back to work almost immediately and I had to take him to the hospital every day for a week, so I drove, carried him in his infant seat, and walked up and down the stairs to our apt and I was fine. Not that I'm suggesting you do any of that if you don't have to.

DD was 2y2m when DS was born via repeat c-section.  My recover both times was super fast and easy.  With DS I was actually up and sitting on the couch in my hospital room 8 hours after surgery began!  We have a two story house with the only bathroom upstairs and bedrooms upstairs.  I stayed in the hospital the 3 days and the next day I was able to drive and lift my son and while I was still careful with my incision I was fully able to care for both children.  I'm having another c-section for this 3rd baby.  I hope to have a great recovery for a 3rd time ::crosses fingers::

ETA: I moved DD from crib to bed at 21 months.
