Baby Slings, Wrap or Carriers

I'm sure this question has been asked a million times before but in doing a search I couldn't find a recent thread.

I have a two year old and I'm looking for a sling/wrap/carrier to carrier baby number two, so I need something that I can use while baby sleeps and I can deal hands free for an extended period of time without my b being in a lot of pain. I have a Bjorne that I tried with DD and she nor I ever liked it. Plus it's not usable until they are a little more sturdy!

Suggestions?  Any STM in my situation?

EDIT: Without my back being in a lot of pain not my baby!

I'm getting an Ergo and either a wrap or a K'Tan. I'm leaning toward the K'Tan for ease of use, but I still have more research to do.

I had a k'tan last time and I did like it but I found that the material stretched out after using it for a little while and I felt like my son would fall out.  I am thinking of trying a moby or different kind of wrap this time.  It was definitely good for being able to have your hands free to deal with other kids and laundry, etc.

I am a FTM, but I found a couple of websites with directions on the dimensions to make a moby-like wrap.  I was thinking of attempting this instead of dishing out the $50 on a real one and having LO not like it. (Plus I can always use the cloth for something else if the project doesn't work)

I used a moby wrap for the first few months, then we switched to a carrier when he was about 4 months or so (holding his head up on his own very well).

Unfortunately, this is a huge matter of personal preference.  I registered for and was given a Moby Wrap and hated it.  Too difficult and cumbersome to use, and when DD was crying, I didn't have a lot of time to try to get it right/adjust it, etc.  Others, though, swear by it.  I carried DD in a Chicco carrier (front carrier) all the time and it was our go-to.  She slept in it, calmed down in it, and it was a life-saver.  (It was also cheaper than a Bjorn or Ergo.) We were then given a 2nd front carrier that I didn't like that much (it was a hand-me-down) but as DD got bigger, the way it sat (with her weight on my hips instead of higher to my chest/strapped to me) was more comfortable.  (DH continued to use it for DD even through this summer when she was 22 mos.)

We plan on using the Chicco again for DD#2 due in April, but my sis also has another front style carrier that she will probably pass on that I might try as a back-up, as she said she preferred it, but since i haven't worn it, I haven't figured out how it stacks up, comfort-wise, against the Chicco.

I'm trying 'em all this time. I had a Moby and Ergo with DD. I didn't like the Moby; too much of a pain to get on and I didn't like that it stretched while DD was in it and I kept having to readjust. It also didn't seem long enough to tie as directed and I'm a very slim person. That was aggravating.

The Ergo is great for once baby is over 4m, IMO.

This time, I'm looking for something I can nurse baby in and use often, since I'll most likely be wearing this baby a lot while wrangling a toddler. I already ordered a Petunia PB pouch and have been looking at ring slings. I will eventually invest in a woven wrap, too.

I just ordered a Beco Gemini. You can carry baby forward facing if you want, or on the front facing you, side, or back.  You also can use it from 7 lbs on without an infant insert (which you would need for the Ergo). I'm a FTM so haven't used it yet, but have heard good reviews from those who also liked to Ergo.

Sadly, it might not be entirely up to you - the baby might have a preference, too. My DD hated any kind of carrier and I think we tried them all - the Moby, the Ergo, the Bjorn (even though they aren't good for baby's joints), a sling...we tried them all and she hated every one. I'm hoping #2 will be more cooperative!

Last time around we tried the bjorn and DS and I both hated it (so uncomfortable for my back).  Then I got the Moby and we both loved it.  I probalby should've gotten the k'tan just because it seems easier but once you get the wraps down with the Moby, it's easy.  DS would sleep in that whenever we were out and I felt like he was very secure.  As he got older, I wanted a more "formed", sturdy carrier so I got the Beco Butterfly II.  I probably should've got with the Beco Gemini because it allows for my carries, but I do love the Butterfly.

This time around, I plan to try a ring sling because it seems like it would be super easy to get the baby in when I'm also dealing with a 2.5 year old.

Your back hurt because the Bjorn sucks, plus it's really unhealthy for baby.

I used a Moby when DD was little and then we bought an Ergo later on.  I enjoyed both.  I'm considering a K'tan this time.

And to the PP who said it stretches out, anything wit fabric like that does, even the Moby.  You just need to wash it and it'll be fine.  DD was a spitter, so I washed it pretty frequently anyway.

I'm all about a moby when baby I little. It helped me get introduced to wrapping with a woven wrap. My vatanai woven wrap is my favorite carrier because it allowed me to carry my dd for the longest without hurting. It does take a bit of practice to learn though, but it isn't far the most comfortable. If you don't want to try a woven I would try a Mei tai carrier.

I was given a sling & several carriers, but the only one we actually purchased was the Baby Hawk.  It was my DS's favorite and the one that I found most comfortable, too!

I used an ergo with DS and will definitely be using it again!  It is an awesome carrier.  There is a newborn insert you can get with it so that you don't need to wait until the baby can hold his/her head up.

A friend of mine has a beco butterfly and absolutely loves it, I may consider getting that one as well this time around.

This is actually not true. The Moby and K'tan fall into the category of 'stretchy' wraps, because they have a slight amount of stretch to them and will stretch with use. Woven wraps are made of specific material that will not stretch. Dolcino and BBslen are some brands I've heard of. They are apparently safer for back carries when the child becomes bigger because of the non stretch factor.

I have the K'tan and use it with my almost 17 month old daughter still (in the hip hold.) I'm looking forward to using it with a newborn! I'm considering getting an Ergo or Beco when this baby gets older. The girls on my 7/11 BMB rave about those two carriers.
