Plastic Bed Protectors

Just curious.... Is anyone buying a plastic protector for your bed in case your water breaks in the middle of the night?

I just love my bed so much and i dont want to ruin it if my water breaks while im in bed. I have a Cal King foam mattress from costco and i dont think i will be able to easy to  clean it.

Any suggestions?

THanks,

I got mine from Bed Bath and Beyond- I think it was $19.99, just zips around your mattress. I put it under my mattress pad so you don't feel it or anything- money well spent!

No need to buy an expensive product. Just buy a cheapo shower curtain liner and put it on under your sheet, or under your mattress pad if you prefer. Most people I know don't bother to do anything, as the liklihood of water breaking before labor is slim (10-15% I think).

However, both my mom and MIL's water broke in bed before labor with their pregnancies, so I did this when I hit 36 weeks in my pg with DS. Low and behold, my water broke in bed with a huge gush. I am SO glad I had the shower curtain! Saved my mattress and cleanup was a breeze - stripped the sheets, threw them in the wash, threw away the curtain liner, and remade the bed, all before heading to the hospital. I put another liner under my sheets (on my side only so DH doesn't have to deal with the plastic-y-ness on his side) last week, just in case.

Mine broke in bed and I had a couple of towels layered under the sheet on my side.  Nothing was ruined no big deal.  I had a huge gush too, but it woke me right up and I was in the bathroom in no time.  Even if it happens, I highly doubt you will sleep through all your amniotic fluid leaking into your bed.

If you have a foam mattress you should have a waterproof mattress cover anyway. Moisture will break them down over time, even just from sweat. I have one on my tempurpedic and it was cheap. Now I'm glad I have it because my water broke in bed while I was sleeping with my last pregnancy. Fortunately I jumped up quick enough and not much got on the bed. But even though everyone says its rare, it can happen out of nowhere.

Just a couple chuck pads, they work for the residence in the nursing home I work in, so I'm sure they'll do the trick for me. I dont see the need to go out and spend the big bucks on something I may or may not need.

My sister also recommended this for after baby with milk leaking. She woke up one night and the bed was soaked from breast milk.  I plan to get one and use for the first few post natal months!

I actually posted about this in the "let's make a list" post, but I'll repost here.

I was convinced last time my water would break in the middle of the night so I wanted one, but while my water never broke, BF'ing in bed got messy.  Between my boobs leaking in the middle of the night and side-laying breastfeeding where DD would come off and just drool when she fell sleep my sheets were a mess.  That waterproof mattress cover got used HARD but totally saved my mattress!  Something I tell all my new-mom friends to get.  (You can imagine if you're going to have baby in your bed at all how many fluids could potentially get on your mattress....the reasons are endless!)    Absolutely worth the investment IMO!

This is what I did.  Hmm...I might go ahead and put one on my bed now while I am thinking about it.

I've always had a protector on all of our beds to increase the life of the mattress.  The one I have has a waterproof plastic backing but is soft on top so once the sheets are on you don't really notice the plastic part.

Didn't think about it. They had to break my water the first time. Now that I think about it I might want it to break on the bed, then it will be a good excuse to finally buy a new one!

It's really a great idea. My water has broken twice in our bed and it was very difficult to clean.

I'm not. Even for women who have their water break naturally it doesn't seem like it's typically a huge gush - more of a slow leak. If I think I'm leaking I'll just try to be careful getting out of bed.

In general, if ever there's a liquid spill that seems impossible to clean up, dump some salt on it and let it dry. And when I say dump some salt on it, I mean, grab a can, and pour, pour, pour.

The salt will pull out all the moisture, and once it's dry, you just vacuum it up. Yeah, maybe not too practical to do when you're in labor, but, it works on carpets, furniture, etc. as well, and is really good for pee clean-up with pet accidents.

Then you can spot clean with whatever your preferred stain remover is without having to worry about if it's penetrating the whole way.

We've always had a waterproof mattress protector on the bed.  You can get them fairly inexpensively at a variety of places.

Yes, we just put ours on this past weekend! We just purchased a new bed five months ago and there is no way I want to deal with that issue. We just bought a cheap zippered plastic cover from Wal-Mart.

Mine was a gush.  It soaked the mattress before I  could get out of bed.  Luckily we have pads on the beds all the time.  For such a cheap investment, I can't imagine not using one.

We have a Tempur-Pedic and so we added the liner to our Christmas list. It is not worth ruining the mattress if my water breaks in bed. Also, it will be good when our child is older and may spend time in our bed. It's definitely worth the money to me!

That's so funny that you posted this! lol.

I actually got one from Target months ago and just put it on my bed on Sunday. :) I wasn't sure if I was the only one who was concerned about this. lol.
