Any info on Spironolactone for me?

So I just recently got back some health care coverage after a year of no insurance and was able to go to the doctor Smile Yay!

I have PCOS, haven't had a period since August, and only had one then b/c I was talking oral B.C.

I had a full blood panel done, glucose, thyroid, hormone levels (including testosterone) all "normal" .

I have been on Met. the past 2 weeks, nothing has changed yet. My doc. suggested Spironolactone. Any one on this?

If my testosterone was not high and I'm TTC ( it can cause birth defects!) why would my doc even think about prescribing me this? I am not going on birth control every again.

It seems to me that this Rx is mostly for people who are not TTC, have high testosterone, and problems with facial hair. I have a bit of a mustache ( I wax/pluck it about every other month) but I'm friggin' Sicilian.

In addition why would my doctor keep me on Met if all hormone and glucose levels were normal? He tried to explain to me but he looked confused himself. I would go to another doctor but his clinic is the only one covered by my plan right now. Just a little bit longer and I can get a referral to an endocrinologist.

Honestly, I think it would be best for you to call your doctor and ask these questions. None of us can tell you what your doc is thinking but it sounds like you aren't in agreement with him.

I have been on Spiro for acne before.. It had no effect on me with my periods. But I did have to go in every 6 mos to have my liver monitored..

Ya, I'm thinking that since my doctor is just a family physician, he really doesn't know that much about PCOS. He did however order me an u/s to see what's going on, it's been about 2-3 years since my last one. Once we get that in I think I've exhausted all my options with him and I can get a referral. Right now I'm working with county health plan benefits so I'm a bit limited on what I can get until DH gets insurance at his new job. "Fertility treatments" aren't supposed to be covered.

I've been looking around online at Spiro today. It seems mostly for secondary condition casued by PCOS, hair growth, skin darkening, and acne. Were you TTC while on it?

Lurker chiming in, but I was on spiro for cystic acne a few years ago, and I was told by both my dermatologist and OB to stop taking it before TTC. I would suggest talking to your doctor again and/or seeing a specialist who might know more about the risks and benefits of taking this while pregnant.

Absolutely 10000% this. My doctor wanted the spironolactone out of my system 3 months before I started TTC. It is in category C. I would definitely ask for a second opinion.

Thanks for the heads up. I told my DH that our new doctor was kind of an idiot! Can't wait until after the u/s.

My son was on that, I agree that I doubt it would be wise to be on it while TTC, glad you are getting a second opinion Smile

Spiro and Met are the most commonly used drugs to treat women with PCOS. They are more preventative than for actual treatment, but if you do not have the lab work to support the need for the medication your doctor should not put you on it. My first PCP that dx me with PCOS put me on both of these without really testing my fasting blood glucose. My blood sugar dropped to the low 60s and my blood pressure dropped low. Both meds made me extremely tired. Needless to say I stopped the meds. Definitely would consult your doctor about your concerns. If he is not willing to listen to your concerns then ask for a patient advocate.

I'm late chiming in, but I used to take this for elevated testosterone.  Worked fabulously for acne.  But it should not be used when TTC.  I had one doctor tell me he felt it was ok to take pre-ovulation every month once we started trying, but most doctors said to stop completely.  It was a moot point anyways.  Off the pill, it made my luteal phase EXTREMELY short.  One month it only lasted 2 days!  My cycles off the pill were <21 days.  So it wasn't really possible to take it (this was all before TTC).

Off BCP August 2010, NFP to avoid. Start TTC May 2011. TTA December 2011 - May 2012 doctor's orders :( TTC July 2012-January 2013. Currently pursuing Napro Technology. January 2013: Napro nurse is starting me on Vitex 3 DPO and Naproxen 8 DPO until my first appointment with the doctor. Based on my charts, they highly suspect endometriosis. March 2013: Diagnosed stage 3 or 4 endometriosis. Removed with excision.
