Poor New Mom

Mobile title: Poor New Mom

I just pulled into our parking garage after my lunch break and this new mom was walking down to the resale shop in the bottom of our building.  I'm gathering things to take back into my office and she comes up to me almost in tears because the she doesn't have change to get out of the garage and the shop was closed and she couldn't see anyone in there who could open the door and give her a token to get out.  By the time she gets that much out she's hysterically crying and saying how her new son is crying and upset in her car and she wants to know if I have any change.  I told her to hold on and that I'd grab a token from my car.  Of course, I used my last token for lunch and to run work errands.  I tell her this, getting all choked up myself, and let her know that I will be back with a token and to go try and calm down her son.  By the time I made it to my office I was such a sobbing mess I had the receptionist run a token up to her instead.

It's just that I've been there.  I've been that new mom who is stressed and still dealing with hormones.  I just felt bad for her so I'm telling you guys about it and crying.

OMG, yes. The hormones mixed with sleep deprivation mixed with the feeling of "Oh shiit, what have I gotten myself into?!" is a recipe for some stress and tears.

I'm glad you helped her. Go you!

Oh, that's really heartbreaking. I know what that's like, I remember those uncontrollable moments of hormones and all the fears come crashing down over something that should be simple.

I'm so glad you were there for her. Little kindnesses can make such a difference in life.

Thats so nice of you to help her. Im sure she really appreciated you. I had a similar situation when DD was a few months old. I went to go grocery shopping and after filling my cart and having them check out and bag everything I realized I had forgotten my wallet. So embarrassing. They held my order for me and as I went out to my car to go back home for my wallet, I saw I had a flat tire. Then DD picked that moment to decide she wanted to poop and then nurse. I lost it. The baby & I were both crying when a worker and a random man asked if I was ok. They took me inside to the office to have a place to change and nurse the baby, and call my DH. I was so thankful for them bc I felt so overwhelmed in that moment that I just stood there in the cold crying.

Everything about it just broke my heart.

She kept apologizing.  You could see that she was embarrassed and trying to control herself but couldn't.  I told her it was fine, that I had a baby at home and was expecting another one, that I got it and it's no big deal.  It was all I could do not to throw my heavy load of documents on the ground and just give her a hug.

It was just one of those moments when everything is going right and then, BAM!, a second later everything is going wrong and you feel like you're just trying to stay a float.  How could I not help her?

Our receptionist said that the woman kept saying thank you and that she wasn't crying anymore.  She said she just look relieved and grateful.

I really hope she was able to easily calm her son down and have a better afternoon.
