She wants our DS to wear this...

at her wedding this summer.

http://babyelephantcostume.org

It's an elephant costume.

My in-laws are Indian and traditionally, there is an elephant at the weddings.

I guess I'm a little annoyed (preggo hormones?) because she didn't ask what I thought, but said, "Dress up baby as this...so there can be an elephant at the reception : )" in an email. So I'm not sure how to read the tone, if she's joking or not.

I'm also annoyed because this costume, which we'd only use for one night, costs about $60 and this also means I have to take care off a 6 month old in a costume that isn't very cool.

I haven't gotten back to her yet, but am I wrong for being annoyed? Is she right to ask us to dress our baby in an expensive costume, only for the reception?

Errr, I'm Indian too - and there isn't necessarily an elephant at weddings all the time!  I would hope your MIL is joking (I'm assuming your MIL?)  Regardless of whether she is or not, I think you should just treat it as a joke and reply with something in the "haha, that's so funny!" department :)

So he isn't IN the wedding? Then yes, I'd be annoyed. If he were in the wedding, it would be one thing. $60 is fairly reasonable for a tux type thing, even for kids. But just to have at the reception? It's kind of out of line.

It's either that or you go buy DS a baby suit and tie outfit, which might also come to around $60, and he would probably also only wear once. I think it would be ok. It would be a good memory for the bride and groom and for all of the guests. Everyone would want a picture.

My inlaws are Indian/Hindu.  We had a traditional Indian ceremony with an elephant statue.  I hope to god they are joking.  If not one of them should dress up as the elephant.  PS it is summer time and usually hot outside so they can sweat their b@lls off in that costume not your baby.  :)

At the very least bring a change of clothes for him so he (and you!) aren't miserable the whole night!

But I hope she was joking!

And if she wasn't joking, I'm sure you could look for another elephant costume online and offer it as an alternative.  I doubt she would care if you got the exact same one.

Here's one for 14 bucks:

I am Indian and I never heard of a baby dressing up as elephant or anything else at weddings and receptions!!!! Ridiculous. Yes, some weddings held in palaces etc, bring elephants on the grounds (but that is so rare and more like for celebreties or rich folks). I really think she is joking, heck if someone said that to me, I'd be pretty mad that they expect my kids to wear costumes? I say she's trying to pull your leg.

Thanks for your support! Especially all you Indian mommas!

It's my SIL that asked, and I love her to death...but my first impression was, "What?! Really?!" I'm sorry, my baby is not going to be a source of entertainment...that's not exactly an honor...etc.

Whew! Thanks for hearing me out! I love her and want her wedding to be everything she wants, but this one threw me off.

You could always order it a little big and then use it again for Halloween.

its way too hot for your baby to be wearing that in her summer wedding and its not halloween, I am also indian and I think its weird, tell her to rent a ganpati statue, it would be more fitting then dressing up your poor kid in a costume!

Uhhhhhh no...that is insane! I would never ask someone to dress their child as an elephant for my wedding...whether it was a tradition or not in my culture!

Respond like it's a joke, "Sounds like a plan! He'll be a size 6-9mo by then, so make sure you buy it for him in the right size! Haha! "

That way if she meant it, you've made it clear you aren't paying for it.

Sorry to come back, but I just had to see what everyone else had to say :)  I'm still just shaking my head over here.  Yeah.  Dressing a baby as an elephant for a wedding?  That is NOT an "Indian thing" :)  Indian culture often has elephants used as symbols and decorations, but there is absolutely nothing where there must be an elephant present for a wedding to be legit, and there definitely isn't a thing where a baby must be dressed as an elephant.  LOL :)

p.s.  In addition to being Indian, and having lived in India on and off all my life - I also have a PhD in religious studies/anthropology of South Asia.  If you need a "source" to quote to your in-laws, happy for you to use me.
