Annoyed with co-workers- vent!

Why do people come into work then they are obviously ill?

For the last two weeks, a co-worker was coming in to work and hacking up a lung. He finally went to the doctor last Thursday - and the doctor said it was a good chance that he had pneumonia. Yet he still came into the office on Friday!!! We put "quarantine" signs up on his office door to make sure he stayed in there. His doctor finally put him on antibiotics...so he shouldn't be contagious anymore, but he was coming into work for TWO weeks and spreading his germs around!

Then at my part-time job (I work as a server a in restaurant), a server came in on Saturday night to work and she was coughing/sneezing non-stop. She wasn't even coughing/sneezing properly - sometimes she wouldn't even cover her mouth and other times she would cough into her hand and then proceed to continue doing whatever she was doing - i.e. getting drinks to bring out to her table - w/o washing her hands! I was completely disgusted. I asked one of the managers if we could send her home, but she said no. Later that night, two separate tables complained about her - DUH! I wouldn't want her serving me my food either! You are not only spreading your germs around to your co-workers, but you are spreading them around to our customers!

I usually get pretty annoyed with people that come into work when they are ill because I think it's rude - now that I'm pregnant, it annoys me even more because I won't be able to take any medicine if I catch your illness!

Sorry for the rant, but since I had two instances happen within days of each other, it was really bugging me!

This is a pet peeve of mine too. I love the quarantine signs, that's hilarious. And I can't believe the server came to work (in a restaurant!!) sick. Just keep the hand sanitizer handy.. and maybe wear one of those surgical masks while you're at work!

Ughhhh, I hate this!!! People think they are "toughing it out" when really they're just infecting the rest of us!

Me too!

And when they cough and you try to keep your distance or cover your own mouth,  it's considered rude...as if they're saying "What? You don't want to breathe in my coughs and sneezes??? How dare you!!" Ummm no, it's rude that you are exposing everyone to your disgusting germs.

I can't stand this ether! I had a co-worker who had issues with her immune system and she became very ill and passed away after a couple of co-workers came in sick. While that was an extreme case that no one could have foreseen, it always makes me think twice about going to work when I am sick.

I would be really mad about that too! I try to go to work if I am sick, but only if I know (i.e., had it confirmed by a doc) that I am NOT contagious, because I don't want to spread it around! That is just basic courtesy..

Of course, if your co-worker has ever worked retail, he might be trained to believe that he has to come in no matter what, because retail employers do not care if you are sick, they just want warm bodies there. I know from experience!

I happen to be one who 'toughs it out', but I do so courteously - I don't cough or sneeze into the air, and very rarely into my hands - that's why I've mastered the elbow-catch, or my favorite, the shirt-catch (pull out the collar and sneeze down) should probably say that if I can't stop coughing or sneezing, that's when I stay home - how are you supposed to get any work done if half your time is spent coughing??  Also, I have a hard and fast rule - fever means stay home. (have to assume Mr. Pneumonia had a fever at some point...)

I also work with food (bakery) and am always diligently washing my hands, paying attention to what I touch.  I am occasionally irritated by what people do with their hands while back in the kitchen - did you know that if you have to wear powdered gloves and scratch your butt, you leave white on the back of your pants??  I've called several people on that one.... :P

I used to work in a ktichen.  What's even more scary than sick servers is sick cooks and it would take a plague to get those people to stay home.  I think kitchen mentality is if you're not dead, you're at work.  Comforting, lol...

I hate it even more since I have had my daughter...but I guess I hate it more that parent's bring their sick children to places! Like the nursery at church or play groups. Seriously? If my baby gets sick then we tend to be out of commission for a month since I usually get wiped out eventually from DD. Drives me INSANE!

....I undertsnad your frustration...

....but having said that...that person who comes in rain or shine, healthy or vomiting ill, may be losing their house, barely able to provide food/clothes/other necessities for a child/children...or have medical bills overtaking their life from an ill relative...

....these reasons may lead them to not have an option of taking off work...especially if they do not have family or a working spouse to compensate for the time they are losing at work...

...not everything can revolve around what annoys US, personally, because they may be a LOT worse off than just coming to work sick...
