Making sense of it?

Hello! I am new to this, its my first pregnancy I am 32 yrs old. We tried for 11 months so this is fantastic. I have some questions and not sure if I am asking the right ones or not. I jump the gun a bit sometimes so hang in there with me :). the first day of my last period was oct. 25th. I found out i was pregnant on nov 26th. I was feeling very crampy so on the 26th I called my Ob to see if this was normal. She wanted me to get blood work to check hCG levels which was 500? She wanted me to come in the next day for an sonogram/ultrasound. It was to early she didn't see anything. 2 days after I had blood work she had me do it again. hCG was 1500?  and she had me come back in today Dec. 3 for another sonogram/ultrasound she saw the sac but that was it and it was still to early. She said I was 4 weeks along. Now she wants me back for another ultrasound/sonogram in 2 weeks! I read up and found cramping is normal and am not having any more so I don't know why we are still having to do ultrasound/sonogram. OB says she is just making sure its a normal pregnancy and coming along ok. Does anyone else think this is too early for all this? Also wondering about hCG levels for this early. Seem High?

Some practice do a ton of sonograms- some (like mine) only do them when medically necessary.  Don't worry if no one has told you to!  Congratulations!

Your Dr. is just making sure the baby is developing like it should. I believe at 6 weeks you should see something/see more, so that is why she wants you back in 2 weeks.

I'm not a doctor, so take this with a huge grain of salt - - -

if *all* you had was cramping, I don't think there is any reason for all this.

A thought: your doctor is getting paid more for all these appointments, and so are the people doing the u/s and blood tests.

If I were you, I would get a second opinion.

I don't really have an answer as far as if all the early ultra sounds are normal, but I had a TON of cramping. It started right around my BFP, so like 3wks 4 days and went till almost 6 wks. It was at least as painful as my worst period cramps, if not worse. Here I am, 13 weeks despite all the cramping! Hang in there. It will be nice reassurance for you to have another u/s in 2 weeks, so I would just go with the flow! GL to you, and hopefully that helps a bit...or at least makes you feel better!

Thank you! The cramping has gone away for the most part but at first it was like bad period cramps like you said! I am sorry you had/have them longer! This does make me feel like I have people to run these things by! This is nice! Thanks again!

If you feel the visits are excessive, you are within your rights to decline them.  FWIW, I agree with the poster who said that, based on what you've said, it seems excessive.

"This does make me feel like I have people to run these things by!"

That's what we're here for. :)

Look, there is *no harm* in these tests, and with some blood tests, it might be better to have them run sooner than later (I found out, for instance, that I had slightly low thyroid - if it wasn't for an early blood test, I wouldn't have known and received the medication for it).

Just remember that you are in charge of your own health care, and you are responsible for the baby's welfare, too. Do what you think is right and best. You might feel embarrassed or uncomfortable to get looked at this early, but there really is no harm in it and you don't have to feel bad about it. *I* think it's too early, but what I think doesn't matter. Focus on how you feel about it, and yes, get a second opinion if you feel you need to. I wouldn't change anything right now until you get that second opinion - if I were in your position.

FWIW? I have had no bleeding, no cramping in the last 3-4 days.  I just wish she realized I was just new at this and didn't know it was normal. And to think I had an appointment with another obgyn the day I found out I was pregnant! Canceled it cause I chickened out to switch 1 week before! I'v been with this ob for 15 yrs!

Yah, I'm a first timer, too. I do a lot of reading from books and reputable sites like this one. I have some experience now that I'm 7 weeks and have seen doctors and u/s and blood people for 3 weeks now. I had some spotting, so I needed to find out what was going on.

Get some good pregnancy books, read this website, lurk on the boards, listen to your doctors. Keep learning.

??

Don't be scared, stressed, or nervous. Just take a deep breath and relax. If the worst you have to worry about so far is "too many appointments", then you are fine.

I totally agree.  My husband and I were talking over dinner and I told him of my concerns and he doesn't know either. I think its too early but if I didn't get it done "what might have" is there. If I do it at $600 a pop (I have insurance but not maternity, insurance paid for the first one) and its not necessary then I have waisted time and money. Not to mention my ob is 2 hrs away from where I live! I know thats bad!  Thank you to all of you! I was so anxious and now I am feeling better. Even though I see both sides Its nice to have opinions!

Cramping is normal as long as it isnt sever and with bleeding so unless you have a past medical history I say she is being ultrasound happy. But, if my OB was ultrasound happy I probably wouldn't mind.

However, see if you can schedule the appt for a few days after 6 weeks. I would rather have an ultrasound that shows the baby's heartbeat and 6 weeks is when it starts beating so I personally would want to give it a few days just to make sure you aren't too early.

You should express your lack of maternity coverage to your OB and let her know you don't want to do anything out of what is needed. Some docs get test happy assuming everyone has coverage. And I say that from experience. We only had major medical for a long while.

It is normal for pregnant women to not have their first ultrasound until 20weeks unless they opt in for the 1st trimester nt scan or run into medical issues such as bleeding or cysts/fibroids...yada yada.

I would ask your doctor what her reasoning for all these tests is. If you feel like she has good reason but can't afford it, planned parenthood and health departments usually do sliding payment based on your income. I hope you are looking into maternity coverage though because its verrrrrry expensive and adds up fast. Good luck!

Thank you! I could not figure out why I couldn't get the "reply" right! haha! Yes we looked into maternity coverage but found it way to high and we would be over paying for a normal birth. Any complications I have will be covered. I just don't want to keep doing it if she is just trying to make $ off of me. I have felt there are more and more "test" at her office lately that aren't necessary. I made an appointment with an alternate OB. I had to anyway as of Sept. my OB doesn't deliver anymore. So I have faith all will work out and be fine! Thank You!! And thanks for showing me how to "quote"!

That would be great but there isn't anything to see this early :( This last one I could see the black hole she said was the sac! I felt good about that! Actually had something in there! :) Maybe in 2 weeks I will see more! fingers crossed!
