Liking a name, but different spelling?

My husband and I both like the name Steven, but we have a problem...he likes it spelled Stephen and I like it spelled Steven...anyone have this problem?

Well, at least you both like the same name! :) Explain to each other why you like it spelled the way you do. There's gotta be a reason deeper than "I just like it." Did one of you know a kid from grade school whose name was spelled the way you don't like and you didn't like that kid? Or...who knows?!

My husband wanted to give our son the middle name Von which sounds like my maiden name, Vaughan, but not my name. We squabbled about it for a few months and I finally just like, "Look, Von is not my name but Vaughan is. So if the kid's middle name is Vaughan/Von, it's gotta be Vaughan." He understood and we gave him my maiden name spelled true.

I know a Stephen and occasionally he is called Steffen. I would know how to pronounce it but that could be good for your argument. :

I'm a teacher and I've had this name on my roster before and pronounced it Steffen.  If you spell it with the ph, he will be correcting people throughout his life.

Stephen looks more professional, but Steven is just easier to spell.

I disagree. I teach first grade. Stephen is a VERY classic way of spelling it and I am surprised people would pronounce it as Steffen/Steffan, which is an entirely different name!

I agree with this. "Steven" seems like a 1970s version of the more professional and traditional spelling of "Stephen."

Oh, I'm so glad to open this post and see both spellings are totally normal. :) hah.

Personally, I prefer Stephen. For some reason I picture Steven as older or something. I can't explain it.

My husband is Stephen, and he is constantly correcting people who call him Stephan, or having to spell it out for people.

My cousin's name is Stephen and I've never heard of anybody mispronouncing it. I like it spelled that way, but maybe that's because I'm used to it. On the other hand, my best friend's little brother's name is Steven and that's fine too.

Stephen is actually the older and more traditional spelling. I have a good friend named Stephen-with-a-ph (though he goes by Steve), but he is in his mid-60s. I say use the traditional spelling--the kid will probably go by Steve most of the time anyway.

This will date me, but I suspect that the reason why people pronounce Stephen as Steffen/Stefan is from the T.V. sitcom Family Matters.  Steve Urkle, one of the main characters, had an alter ego named/pronounced Stefan, so he was both Steven and Stefan.  (Does any one else remember dorky Steve coming out of his machine as the stunning Stefan?)

Haha I remember I'm not sure if that show came out while I was a little kid or before. I do watch the reruns and I love it. Everytime I see Stephen I do think of Stefan but I know that it's not pronounced like that.

OP I actually like Steven better though so your argument as PP said could be that your DS would have to correct people all the time.

Agreed. This is my LO's name...we spell it with a 'ph'. It is the biblical/traditional way of spelling it. Most people know that there are two ways of spelling it so I side-eye anyone that pronounces it differently when it is seen.

ETA: Also, our little one does not go by our nickname. What I have found to be true is that if your name is Steven it gets shorten to Steve. However, if it is with a "ph" you generally go by then entire name.

Yes, we have had to correct people that it is not Stefan/Stephan, but they are usually of a younger generation. Everyone my parents generation knows exactly what the name is.
