I had an epidural with my son and I still felt it when he was born. I am going to have one this time too.

My circumstances are a bit different though. I have muscular dystrophy, so my ob wants me to have an epidural early on in the labour so I don't get too exhuasted to push when the time comes.

I'm planning to not get an epidural. Just my preference though. I want to be able to walk around and move around before, during, and after labor. I've also heard too many horror stories of them just not working and then I feel like I would just get so frustrated.

Also I may be more scared of needles than child birth :P

I got an epi with DD. It worked for about 2.5 hrs of an 18 hr labor. The pain after it wore off was horrible. I plan to go all natural and VBAC this time.

I am planning to see how things go. If the pain isn't something I can deal with, I'll get the epidural.

I'm getting an epidural! I have very low pain tolerance. If I were you, I would leave it as an option- if this is your first birth, you may not know how you & your body is going to deal with the pain. That's my opinion Smile

I had an epidural with DS1.  I considered going natural with these babies (doing the Bradley Method) but I'm leaning towards doing the epi again.

There's no right or wrong, whatever gets baby here safe is the goal.

I'm going with a natural birth at a birth center. I feel this is the best choice for me and it's the way birth was meant to be. That's my personal opinion.

I plan on going unmedicated. Having a needle in my back freaks me out, I don't like the idea of not being able to move my legs, and I think I'll like the feeling of accomplishment from having a baby without medication!

I am going to keep an open mind though. I know of two women who are very crunchy granola, anti-medication types and they opted to have epidurals because their labors were really long and they needed a rest after hours of not progressing.

I've been thinking about this a lot. I'm very torn. Here's my plan, for now:

Take lamaze classes.

When contractions start/water breaks, go to hospital. I'm GBS positive, so I don't have much choice.

Just see how it goes. If I can handle the pain, I'll stick with it. If not, I'll opt for the epidural. There's no reason to decide now, is my opinion.

I had the epi for my first but I was in labor for over 17 hours. My second was all natural but I was only in labor for 3 hours. Going natural was the best in my opinion. I could tell what my body was doing and what I needed to do to get her out. I walked to my recovery room and it literally was the easiest recovery ever.

Now that I'm pregnant with my 3rd I still haven't ruled out the epi. If someone could tell me that I would only be in labor again for 3 hours, piece of cake. But the pain of contractions makes you think and do crazy things. If you can go natural, great for you! But if you can't, you aren't a failure or anything. It's a pain like no other!!

I had an epidural with my DD and it was so strong. I could not feel where to push so they had to "suck" her out. When she came out she was not crying and I was so "drugged up" I could not even talk to ask my DH or the Dr. why she was not crying. Her coord was wrapped around her neck. It scared me! So I really don't want one this time. Every one and every time is different, just sharing my experience.

I got an epi with DS1 and DS2 going again for this pregnancy also probably :) My epi didn't work the first time and I was too scared to speak up as a first timer-second time it worked perfectly but I still felt when I needed to push (I woke up from sleep, screaming" "it's time to push!") and I was exactly 10 cm and ready LOL! and I was laughing and well rested while pushing, So it was a great experience for me. Just what works for me, if I can go without one I will this time around if I can't I'll ask for one.

I like to think I have a pretty good pain tolerance so I will see how it goes. I am definatly keeping an open mind, and it helps alot that my dh just wants me to do what ever I feel is necessary! I plan to stay at home as long as possiable but when the time comes we will see how it all goes :)

I am having my birth at a birthing center and therefore will not have an option of an epidural. That is actually part of the reason I decided to go with the birthing center. I know my body is capable of giving birth naturally and I want to experience that. I was afraid that if I was in a hospital and the option was there I would take it even if I didn't NEED it. No matter how much it hurts... that level of pain will go away when the baby arrives.

I got an epi at 5cm with DD. It was nice. But my labor deteriorated and I ended up with a C/S because DD would not descend. I won't speculate as to whether it was from the drugs or not.

I'm very committed to having a VBAC this time, and think my best chance comes if I go med free. So that's the plan; I'm doing hypnobirthing and hiring a doula to help me through it.

I had it with DD and plan on having it again. I still felt a lot of pressure and pain... I don't know if it worked or not because I have nothing to compare it to. Either way I'm getting it again, for sure! There is a point of no return that you can't get it after, if you miss the window you are on your own!

Epi=Heaven  I had one both times and I was well rested when it was time to push. You need your energy when the baby is here and that extra time I was able to rest while having contractions was well worth it.

3rd time Mama here to share my epidural experience. I got an epidural with my 1st, but it didn't work. Only numbed one leg so I felt everything, plus they upped the meds so much to see if they could get the epidural to work that it made me super shakey and nauseated. All around horrible experience.

With my 2nd, I was laboring for 11 hours all natural- fast, hard contractions - but my cervix just wasn't dialating! I was stuck at 3 centimeters for 8 excruciating hours. I finally couldn't stand the pain any longer and got an epidural. It worked like MAGIC. I felt nothing until 1 1/2 hours later when I felt the urge to push. Nurse checked, and I was at 10 cm and ready to push! The Dr told me sometimes epidurals speed things up, like in my case.

All of that to say, my advice is to take things as they come, be flexible, and just be open to readjusting your birth plan as things go along. You just can't predict the way things are going to go. This time around, I would like to go all natural, but I am going to keep the option of an epidural open (especially since it was such an amazing relief with #2).

I got one with DS and will definitely get one again this time.  DS resulted in an emergency c/s, so if the epi wasn't in, I would have had to been put totally under.  At least with an epidural, if I need another c/s. I will be awake and able to be part of the birth.

This is me. I had my first 3 without an epi due to my fear of needles. Over it now, but I think unmedicated is best.

Hx of PTL and GD, deliveries at 35 and 37 weeks. On P17 shots and modified bedrest now, a few scares but LO is hanging tough! ! Three beautiful children; 17, 13, and 9, and very excited to be pregnant with DH first child after a tough year of TTC and fertility treatments.

My goal was to go natural with DS1, but I wasn't 100% against epidurals because I wasn't sure how well I would handle the pain.  My contractions were completely bearable until my water broke (naturally) and I went immediately into transition.  Before I knew it I was allowed to push!  I had in my birth plan that I wanted my water to break naturally, because I'd researched that it continues to protect baby during labor & helps Mama with the pain.  DS1 was born naturally, and that will definitely be in my birth plan for DS2, too!

I had an awesome epi and plan to again if possible (if I progress so fast that there is no time, yay for a fast labor).  I did have a "window" where it didn't take but for the most part I didn't feel the labor pains and when I pushed I felt a ton of pressure, could move around easily, readjust myself, etc.  Pushing was not a problem and within an hour I walking myself, carrying my overnight bag, over to my post-partum room.

With my first I had an epidural and loved it.  My water broke big time but I never started contracting so they had to induce me.  I made it to 7 cm before I was like "Guess I should get the epidural because this is gonna get really painful pretty darn quick!" The whole process was a breeze and I was so glad I did it.  I could still feel all the pressure without the actual pain.  I was also glad I had one because during pushing my contractions were literally one on top of the other and I ended up pushing for 4 hours like that because he was turned ever so slightly so he wasn't fitting under my pubic bone properly.  I was so glad I wasn't having pain on top of everything else.

I am planning on an epidural for this one as well.  I don't think I need to have all the pain in order to feel like I truly experienced childbirth.  To each their own.

I had an epidural last time and it was definitely nice. Unfortunately, I sustained some injuries as I pushed and due to that, I'm trying for a water birth this time around. I don't want to reinjure myself...it took far too long to heal from it. I couldn't sit straight for almost 3 months!

My advice... prepare for a natural birth but be open to whatever happens when the time comes. I prepared for a Bradley method birth and it really helped involve my husband in the planning process. It also allowed me to labor for a lot longer at home than I probably would have otherwise since I was able to relax through contractions. My water broke at home and I calmly showered, did my hair and makeup, then watched a little Judge Judy before I woke up hubby to take me to the hospital. At the hospital I labored for about 7 hours before I started getting tired. At that point the nurse advised me to go ahead and get the epidural because I still had a long way to go and I was already getting tired. In the end I made the best choice because I ended up having an unavoidable emergency C-Section and having the epidural line in place already kept me from being knocked out through the birth. Sometimes things don't go as planned. I've heard of epidurals not working for some people even. It's best to know how to manage the pain either way.

I never knew if I was having a csection or not so I got epis but labored as long as I could with out them If I VBAC I will go with out. Though. Have to tell you in the event that the baby needs to be OUT NOW you will risk going under general and missing everything with out an epidural. So something to think about.
