Mold WWYD?

So we were planning on going to my parent's for Christmas and staying Sat-Mon. Well this weekend she mentioned something about the carpet in the basement infested with mold. Hold the phone!! The basement is open to the upstairs where we would sleep. So even if you are in the living room or kitchen you'd be breathing it in. I'm going to bring it up to my OB but I'm already not feeling comfortable staying there. WWYD?

I find pregnancy to be an excellent excuse fur everything.  I'd either stay at a hotel or not go.  It's probably not dangerous for such a smart time, but it could give you respiratory symptoms.

Are the having it cleaned and everything before you get there? If they are having it professionally done I would say it would be safe. If not I would not chance it. As PP said pregnancy is a great excuse for a lot of thigs and I think this time it would be ok to use it.

Ask if they have had it checked...Not all mold is hazardous, just a pain....I thought I had mold in my house about a year ago...Thankfully we didn't BUT they guy did explain the different kinds of mold. Also, if they plan on cleaning it I would only consider it if it was done professionally. Perfect time to pull the pregnancy card. Good Luck!

The mold will be running throughout the HVAC system so no matter where you are you will inhale it, in addition to where you sleep.  I would not take a chance, looks like you have to start protecting your child before it's even born. I know it's a short time but if something happens you won't be able to forgive yourself.

They haven't had it checked yet and it sounds like they aren't planning on even getting it cleaned up any time soon. My reaction to all of that was 0_0 but I know my mother will throw an epic tantrum over us not staying there for Christmas. I was already thinking what everyone else said and why risk it?

Maybe talk to your mom first. If she really wants you to stay with her, I would at least speak to her and see if she will have it checked for the type. Like PP said, not all mold is hazardous, so it may not be a huge problem.

Most of what I read about mold, says that the only way it will harm your baby is if you eat it. Just inhaling wouldn't prove to be problematic for the baby (it might cause respiratory irritation for you).

Even the cleanest of homes can have mold in them. I would see if your mom would have it tested (if it's black mold then I would definitely stay away) and possibly have it removed before you just back out.

FWIW cleaning it wouldn't be enough. They'll really have to pull it all up.

That being said if they haven't done anything with it, it PROBABLY won't hurt you or baby but it would still gross me out.

Yeah, my biggest hesitation is I already have year round allergies and I don't want to be miserable and sick the entire time. I will talk to her about having it tested/removed.
