swept membranes before 40 weeks?

Noticing a lot of ladies talking about getting their membranes swept before 40 weeks and I assumed they didn't do that until you were passed your due date in order to get things moving along.  Is this normal or a special circumstance to do this before you hit 40 weeks?  Just curious :)

Depends on the provider, some will do it before the EDD.  I believe my last pregnancy my practice started offering it to me at 38 weeks, definitely 39.  It's not really a good idea though because there's a risk that it can rupture your membranes.  I opted to have it done at 40 weeks last time (didn't work).  I don't intend to do it this time at all unless I end up in a situation where I'm facing a medically necessary induction.  Then I would be willing to try it.  Otherwise, it's not worth the risk to me (or the discomfort when it's not likely to work if my body isn't ready for labor anyway).

I see women saying they get them at 38/39 weeks often but I'm foregoing all internal checks until the first appointment after my due date so I definitely won't have a sweep until/unless I go late.

My doctor never mention sweeping my membranes or helping me along in any way. I'm not sure if he doesn't do them or just didn't offer it to me. I guess I've always heard of women having membrane sweeps anytime after 38 weeks.

I may do it at 38 weeks or so this time. I went 9 day past my EDD and DS was almost 9 lbs. I ended up having a tough labor after being transferred to the hospital. My midwife said they could try to get things moving a little earlier this time so baby doesnt get so big.

I had this done yesterday, at 38 weeks. That is when my provider starts offering.

I had mine done yesterday at 39+1 weeks. That is the earliest the doctor would do it and I asked for it. It's totally up to you and your preference, some people don't want to do it. It doesn't work the same for everyone, so don't be frustrated if it doesn't work. My belly is measuring 41 weeks and I'm 39 so I was worried about the baby getting to big to the point of  tough labor or a needed c-section. We'll see if it speeds things along, fingers crossed! My OB did it on my due date with DD and it hurt!  It also didn't work.  I still had to be induced and that barely worked.
