CP: Anastasia, Gwen, Ivy?

I have posted on here before about the name Anastasia and got generally good feedback. The name Anastasia has family significance being my great Grandmother's name (who I never met). I'm still not 100% sold on Anastasia though so have been considering other names. Including Gwen (Gwyneth?) and Ivy. Gwen, Gwyneth, and Ivy have no family signifcance at all. Which name do you like best? And, help me find a middle name to honor my Dad. His name is Larry.Raymond. I had been thinking Rae, but that doesn't work with all these names. Also, our last name is 3 syllables and starts with van (quite a mouthful).

Which first name do you like best?

  • Anastasia (39.1%)
  • Gwen (14.5%)
  • Gwyneth (nn Gwen) (21.8%)
  • Ivy (24.5%)
  • Total Votes: 110

I want to like Anastasia because of the family significance but it reminds me of a Disney Princess name and is too frilly for my taste.  What about using it as a MN?  You could always incorporate your dad's name into a future child's name and who knows? It might be a boy.

I love Anastasia.  It's right up my alley - feminine, strong name with an excellent history.  Anastasia wasn't a Disney princess - by the way!!  Another company made that movie.  But, she was at least real, unlike those other princesses like Ariel and Jasmine.

My second choice would be Ivy.  Love it.  Different.

I've never cared for Gwen, Gwyneth or Gwendolyn.

EDIT: I can't even spell Gwyneth correctly...

I like Ivy the best and I think it would go well with Rae as a middle name, especially since your last name is long.

ETA:  I think Anatasia with a long last name is too much.

I think Anastasia Rae is very pretty! I voted for Anastasia mostly because of the family significance. I'm a sucker for sentimental names ;) If it weren't for that, I would have voted for Gwyneth. Some middle name suggestions: Laura, Lorraine, Ramona.

I voted Ivy.

Anastasia is a fine name, but I don't put a lot of stock in family significance if it's a name that was used once for someone you've never met. To me, that's not the same as carrying on a long-standing tradition, or naming after someone who means/meant a lot to you. If there's a name you love, and also it's the name of someone on your family tree, that's an added bonus, but IMO that kind of "significance" shouldn't trump a name you like better that doesn't have family ties.

I LOVE the name Anastasia and was going to ask about it when I saw your thread. Romantic and feminine. Despite that, choose the name that you like the most. You are not obligated to pick the family name.

I love Anastasia.  DH always vetoes it and it sounds like we're trying too hard with our last name.  I think Rae with any of them works to honor your family.  Flow is least important in my mind.  You don't even use the middle name that often.

Gwyneth and Ivy are great too.  I definitely prefer a formal name for Gwen.

That was tough because I really like Gwyneth and Ivy.  I voted for Gwyneth because you could get a nn with Gwen.

I voted for Anastasia, but I am wondering how you would pronounce it?

a-nə-STAS-yə (this is how my Greek cousin pronounces her name)

a-nə-STAY-zhə (like the Disney princess?)

Either way I like it :)

I really want to like Anastasia, but it still just has a 50 Shades association with me... which is sad, considering I haven't even read the book. If trendy/popularity bothers you, I might be leery of that choice since there is a movie planned soon, yes? I just see that having a bit of a bump in the next couple years.

I am not a big fan of Gwen by itself, but I like Ivy and Gwyneth (prefer the NN Wyn). I think Gwyneth Rae sounds lovely.

I would like Anastasia on someone else's child, but if I were naming my own baby I would go with Gwyneth.  For me Anastasia is a bit of a mouthful.  Cute nn potential though.  Stacy from Babysitter's Club's full name was Anastasia if I'm not mistaken!

ETA: For middle names how about Larissa or Lauren?

This is pretty much how I feel about the family significance too. Yes, the name Anastasia would be "honoring" my family, but it is not a person that I actually knew. BUT, we would likely use the nn "Anna" which has significance in DH's family as well (his great grandmother, who he also never met). Also, I kind of feel like using Anastasia also honors everyone in the family tree after her (so, my Grandpa then my Mom).  Thanks for the input.

Love Anastasia...  but all I can think about is 50 Shades of Grey.

I haven't read 50 shades. Is this something to be truly concerned about? It doesn't seem like the kind of association I want for my DD if it is going to stick around.

I like Anastasia or Ivy best. If I named my daughter Anastasia, though, I think I'd have to come up with a nickname too because it would be kind of a mouthful to say all the time. I like Anna best for a nickname, but I have heard people use Stacey as a nickname too.

Love Ivy, I may be biased though since DD is Ivy Pearl :-)  I like the combo Ivy Rae, they flow well together. Ivy Lauren would be cute too.

I also really like Anastasia, then Ivy. I'm actually not a big fan of Rae as a middle name. It's suggested on here fairly often but it's just NMS, especially with a name like Anastasia. I like PPs suggestion of something like Lauren, maybe Lara, but I'm not sure about the flow of that. With Ivy I really like the suggestion of Ramona.
