Nicola

I think I posted about this a while back (before getting pg) but I wanted some new opinions on this girl name:  Nicola

A few questions:

1. How would you immediately pronounce it?
2. Do you like it/love it/hate it?
3. Can you rec some "M" middle names that go?  Nicola Marie, Nicola Mabel...

I would pronounce it Nic-ola and I don't hate it, but I don't love it either.  The more I say it, I start to like it more and more.  Nicola Michelle maybe?

NIC-uh-luh

I like it.

I like Nicola Marie better than Nicola Mabel, but IMO Marie is a bit of a snore for a middle name.

ETA: Nickel-uh is a better way to write the pronunciation - that's what I was going for too.

I really like the name.  I would pronounce it Nickel-ah.  I agree with PP that Marie is a snore.  It is my middle name along with 40 million other women in their late 30's.  I always wished I had a cool middle name like some of my friends did.

1. I would pronounce it as Ni-cola if that makes any sense.  Ni would be like how you pronounce the Ni in Nick

2. I like it.  I actually know a Nicola and I always thought it was refreshing to hear.  I could see it working on all ages.  She was mid 40's so I definitely think it ages well.

3.  I would do something more traditional because Nicola is a different name.  I like Marie, Marian, Michelle,

1. Yes, I know how to pronounce it (nee-coh-luh)

2. I like it okay.  I prefer Nicolette.

3. Nicola Mary, Nicola Melanie, Nicola Mallory (anything that doesn't end in "a" sound should be fine!)

1. I'd pronounce it Ni-Co-La, and

2. My first thought is Nikola Tesla, so it sounds like a boy name to me. I don't really like it for a girl.

3. How about... Margaret?

I would pronounce it Nicolea. I don't really have any ideas for middle except Maisy or a classic Michelle?

That's my main issue with it... it's always a 50/50 split on how people pronounce it when they see it..  and I honestly don't know which way I like better!  Either..

nee-co-luh (small emphasis on cola, but mostly just prn like Nicole with the "uh" on the end)

or

NICKEL-uh

I've never heard the Nickel-uh pronunciation ...ever.  Not sure if that's helpful?  :-)

I knew a few people with this name in the UK, always pronounced Nickel uh. It is/was fairly popular there.

I would pronounce it KNEE-co-la.

I like it, but I think you're going to have pronunciation problems.

1. I would pronounce it nee-CO-la or ni-CO-la (I've heard it both ways)

2.  I love it... for a boy.  I know it can be girl's name too, but the only two I knew (a Nicola and a Nikola) were both boys originally from Eastern Europe.

3.  Nicola Michelle, Nicola Marie, Nicola Marion.  If you like the double "a" ending I think Nicola Marina sounds cool.

"nee-coh-lah" is how I pronounce it. I know a girl named Nikola and I think it is a fine name, it fits her, is different but still a normal/real name, and pretty.

1. I would pronounce it Nickle-ah

2. I like it. I knew a girl named Nicola in HS, and have a reletive named Nicolette.

3. I think middle names should have personal meaning ( a family name, a name you have been attached to using for forever, a meaning you like etc) so I don't like suggesting middle names.

Well, its MY name, so I guess I can comment with a small amount of authority? ;)

Its pronounced Nickel-uh. Everyone in the USA will pronounce it Nicole-uh.  Everyone in the rest of the world will say it the right way. Lots of people will think its a typo of Nicole.

In Italy its a male name, but in 30 years I have never been mistaken for a boy. If I was, it wouldnt bother me. Obviously since I am an adult, I think it ages fine. I was called Nikki when I was younger and still some today.

While of course no one tells you when they hate your name, I do get a HUGE amount of compliments on it. I absolutely love my name and am very glad I am not a Nicole. Its one of the reasons I have some of my children names that so many people swear will be 'nightmares' for certain reasons (uncommon, unisex, unknown pronunciation) because I actually have one and wouldnt change it to the more common/ easier/ boring version.

My middle name is Jane. I would go with a one syllable name.

Wel, I am not American by birth/ childhood so I grew up with it being said the 'right' way then moved here 11 years ago and everyone says it Nicole-uh. I don't bother correcting strangers (receptionists, etc) but I do correct people who I am meeting and will know (if that makes sense). I will tell you that a lot of Americans find Nickel-uh verrrrryyyyyy hard to get their tongues around at all. When we lived in the south I basically gave up on Nickel-uh and answer to Nicole-uh as well. I don't mind Nicole-uh though, it's just not how I say it in my head or how my family/DH etc say it. :)

I hope you do use it, it's a great name. :)
