Charting & BBT

Hello, I'm new to The Bump and the world of charting and I just had a question.  Is it normal for one's BBT to be all over the map?  I try to be good about taking it at the same time everyday, right after waking up, without even getting out of bed but I feel like it fluctuates a lot and I'm not sure if that is normal.  Within the last three days it's gone from 98.6 to 98.4 to today at 98 degrees.  I'm two days away from getting my period if that info helps at all.  I just hope I'm doing it right and not making a rookie mistake!  Any ideas?

The last 3 days of temps don't seem out of the ordinary to me.  Mine normally fluctuates like that too.  When you are getting close to your period, it normally starts to drop (if you aren't pregnant).  Sounds like you are doing it right!

If you are just days before getting your period, it makes sense that your temperature would start to drop (if you aren't pregnant, of course). This is because the production of progesterone is tapering off, which causes a decrease in BBT. It looks like that may be what is going on.

Welcome and good luck!

My temps sometimes fluctuate between a whole degree from day to day, so a fluctuation of .4 or .6 doesn't seem that wacky to me.  And AF tends to make things even wonkier.  Just keep on with the temping and a pattern should emerge. Welcome and best of luck!

Yeah, I have only just begun temping the last couple days. My temps have been around a .4 difference as well. Good to know that is normal, because I feel like I have no idea what I am doing. So, if it helps... you aren't the only one slightly unsure about what you are doing. GL!

I almost posted this exact same question! Glad I looked back a few posts. Though I'm at the start of my cycle, not the end. My temps have ranged from 97.0 to 97.4. I'm a bit concerned because Fertility Friend says the shift at ovulation is around 0.1 degrees so how would I see that? Guess I will see what happens!

How early in your cycle are you? Temps can get wacky during AF, too. For me, they settle into a lower range close to O.

I'm not sure where you're looking on FF but a 0.1 shift for ovulation is far too small. This FAQ says 0.4 degrees, which makes much more sense:

Oh thanks! I've been taking the FF "classes" that they email out each day to the newbies. Maybe I misread it. .4 makes more sense.

Today is CD10. I started temping on CD4. So far my temps have been rounded
97.4
97.5
97.2
97.0
97.2
97.3
97.1

I'm also doing OPKs, so far they've been negative, as expected. I think I O around CD16 normally, but that's not based on anything scientific. I was hoping to prove or disprove that theory by charting. And hopefully get pg in the meantime!.

I just bought some OPK's today too!  I'm super impatient to get the ball rolling!  :)  Those temps sound pretty consistent and I've heard the temp shift can be up to half a degree - so noticeable!  :)  Thank you all for your input and responses.  This is extremely helpful to a rook like me!  And GL to all out there!!
